Sebastião Antônio da Silva, a well-known and respected composer of studies, passed away on January 27, 2022, in a hospital located on the same street where he lived, in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. He was 93 years old.
Sabastião was a man of exceptional talent and intelligence. He learned Russian, I don’t know how, so that he could read specialized Russian magazines on problems. He was a translator by profession, he used to translate from German and Latin into Portuguese. He also had literary inclinations. I read on the Internet, with pleasure and delight, one of his poems. Sebastião had a moment of recognition for his unforgettable legacy to Brazilian problemism when he visited, in 2009, the venue where the WFCC Congress was held in Rio de Janeiro.
In his honor, we will soon launch a composition tournament, along with a similar tribute to our dear Almiro Zarur.
I would like to thank Bruno Garcia Perez for researching and finding Sebastião's death certificate, just as he had done for Almiro Zarur.
Below, I reproduce one of the intriguing studies composed by Sebastião, which has already challenged the skills of masters and grandmasters of solving chess.

White to play and draw | | (363) Posted by Zalmen Kornin [Wednesday, Mar 19, 2025 20:34] | "...our wizard of the Endgame Studies" (F A Sonnenfeld) # RIP | | (364) Posted by Harry Fougiaxis [Wednesday, May 7, 2025 10:55] | On behalf of the Greek Chess Composition Committee, I am sad to report that Pavlos Moutecidis passed away on May 5, 2025. Moutecidis was born on November 7, 1930 in Drama (a small city in the northern part of Greece) and graduated as civil engineer from the National Technical University of Thessaloniki, where he had been living since then. Instead of an obituary, I prefer to redirect to the PDF with the award of his 75th jubilee tourney, please refer to the file https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/5t13che4w6z4njw32ri6i/Moutecidis-Fougiaxis-Prentos-JT-2006.pdf?rlkey=0dcw6fpaq0yg2a6vropd8yj77&st=hgrhfh4y&dl=0 There is a self-biography of him in the booklet (strangely, the date of birth mentioned in it is incorrect). He had been attending the PCCC/WFCC yearly meetings for almost 30 years, although he could neither write nor speak any foreign language. I think he initiated with the Metaxa brandy tourney the long-standing series of composing contests with alcoholic prizes as trophies. He had composed around 2000 problems, with long selfmates being his specialty, and he was awarded with the IM composing title in 1984.
Our condolences to his three daughters. Rest in peace, Pavlos!

It was a blessing to have Pavlos as an unconditional friend. With all his life-long involvement in chess,
with thousands of published problems and rewards, composition was for him a world of friends-composers in the first place.
Even 45 years ago, when friendship was much more valued than now, Pavlos was unique in this respect. Nowadays it is literally impossible to describe to new generations what a great and colourful character he was.
Since early 80-es he was the first to start unofficial thematic tourneys in the context of the Congress.
The point was to gladly deliver the big boxes of Metaxa (differing in numbers of stars!) to the composers of his beloved Selfmate,
and to extend his unlimited friendship that way.
In 1983, on the way to Thassos with a friend, I called him passing through Thessaloniki. In some minutes he was there: taking all our luggage in hands and bringing us his home. Right after, he took all his family, his friends and the two of us to the taverna near by.
On the way to Thassos we got from him the tend and blanket we missed to prepare. He was understanding very well the joyful and crazy time of youth and was treating as the kids who need his support. The same summer, during the Bat-Yam WCCC he literally saved me from investigation by the hotel management: just grabbed me by shoulder and took me away ...
At the closing ceremony of the Sarajevo WCCC 1984, during the improvised musical evening, Pavlos and his daughters were singing “Ta Pedia Tou Pirea”. We learnt all the lyrics…
In 2004, after the Halkidiki WCCC, he took a big group of participants to his Thessaloniki flat, always happy to be the host and always regretting composers are not coming more often to his city.
In 2012 Pavlos decided to travel alone from Greece to take part in the Belgrade Festival, once again with Metaxa...
My deepest condolences to Loukia, Alexandra and Maria, and to all our Greek friends.
Rest in peace, dear Pavlaki! | | (366) Posted by seetharaman kalyan [Thursday, May 8, 2025 17:34] | Very touching and heartfelt memories and condolences. | | (367) Posted by Sven Trommler [Friday, May 30, 2025 16:20] | We mourn the loss of Peter Sickinger (06.12.1943 - 13.05.2025).
The German FIDE Master (22.83 points) had an attractive composing style that was close to the solvers. Especially his threemovers and selfmates will be missed in the problem magazins.
We hope that he will gain the IM title with the FIDE Album 2022-2024.
