Honor to master Zarur!

Our good friend Jorge Karpos made a research in YACPDB of a matrix including a black King and white and black knights (https://www.yacpdb.org/#search/ODg4NE4zMWtuMW4zODFONjgvLy8vLy8vL2gjMi8vLy8vLzEvMS8xLzA=/1), and he found these "two" problems:

Almiro Zarur
Dalla Rosa JT, 1964
1st Commendation
(= 5+10 )

h#2
1.Sfe2 Sgf4 2.Se6 Se3#
1.Sfe6 Sdf4 2.Se2 Se3#

Norman Alasdair Macleod
Sinfonie Scacchistiche, 1982
(= 5+10 )

h#2
1.Scd2 Sbc4 2.Sd6 Sd3#
1.Scd6 Sec4 2.Sd2 Sd3#

The curious thing is that the first problem was not included in the FIDE Albun, but the second was...

Probably, the judge of Sinfonie Scacchistie knew that Macleod's problem was completely anticipated, but the Albun judges didn't.

My main feeling after reading Kapros' message (thank you very much, Jorge!) was one of deep respect and admiration for our unforgettable master Almiro Zarur! He composed such an exquisite problem in 1964: wonderful strategy, same final position, no repetition of moves. The role of the white rook, just guarding the WN on f4 and being interfered by the same piece, makes me remember of some prized modern problems. Amazing, great!

Here here!

One thing: This might have gone better in the "X-Files: Anticipations" section.

Maybe, James, but as I have said, the main feeling I experienced was not about the anticipation, but admiration for a work I had never paid enough attention to, being the author someone close to me somehow.

Regardless of the anticipation, it is a rare case that a 18 years old problem can enter the Album.

Indeed, Olaf. Very surprising, especially in the field of helpmates, which had experienced a boom of progress between the two dates. Another curiosity: in his book "Xadrez Mágico", Zarur didn't include this problem!

I've just seen in PDB that Macleod's problem was awarded with the 1st HM in a thematic tournament of Sinfonie Scacchistiche, 1982. So, the judge didn't realize it was anticipated.

Feather, Black to Play, p. 16:
"The ratio of helpmates selected to helpmates submitted for the 1971-73 Album is the lowest of any genre in any Album, and the next two were similar. Understandably, perhaps, the two Albums after that overcompensated. Such an oscillation from one extreme to another gives a false picture. Some of the Album problems are completely anticipated."

"If you don't rate, just overcompensate" The Offspring :-)
I've seen things even more egregious, for example two virtually identical #2
in the same album. (Sorry, no link, my epic pattern recognition abilities
were better 30 years ago...)

Really, Zalmen? You are right, I hadn't noticed that. Kapros had said to me it was not included in the FIDE Album. O.K., but again, I don't understand why Zarur didn't include this problem in his book. It seems impossible, I'll check again.

Yes, Marcos ... I'm leafing through my sample of "Xadrez Imaginário" right now. P0527412 is number 96 here, and P0526154 number 97 here as well (respectively first prize and third HM in the 1964 "Festival Dalla Rosa".
(These two without notice of Album FIDE Reprints in our online source ...)

Embarras de richesse: yet another distinguished composition from the same event - and moreover albumed ...

Thanks to J M Kapros for finding the coincidence and to You for the thread on screen... really very interesting! (Wow, same position mirrored - honi soit qui mal'y pense...)

Yes Zalmen, I had noticed these two other problems awarded in the same festival. Both good, but not so good as this one, which is really superb, in my view. Zarur composed dozens of problems with a pair or two of knights doing illusionisms. Maybe his first inspiration was that Sonnenfeld's well-known twomover "horse race".

Zalmen, the last news I heard from him it was around September/2021. A little time before, he phoned me (first time in life!), and we talked for a long time. Afterwards, Ricardo Vieira told me that he had suffered a bad accident, in which he had one of the legs severely injured. Some scarce news from hospital followed, it seems that the old man was severely depressed and didn't want to talk about illness. You remember how joyful he used to be. His wife had passed away some years before, he used to live alone after his wife's death, he had not any children or close relative, in short we lost contact with him. We are afraid he passed away, but we have no confirmation. The last time I tried to have some information, in the middle of 2022, I just found out that his registration in the register of natural persons was still active, but this doesn't prove that he was alive.

The reprint information in PDB is wrong.
