John Ling has died at the age of 95. John, whose first problem was published in 1942, was General Editor of The Problemist from 1964 to 1972 and published the magazine Problem Observer for 50 years. He was also for many years in the 1950s and 1960s the editor of one of the most important newspaper columns in Britain, that of The Observer.

Britain has lost another well-known composer. Michael Lipton passed away on 1st April at the age of 86. Michael's first problems were published in 1951, and he gained the International Master of Composition title in 1976. He was a frequent contributor to The Problemist and served as BCPS President from 1999 to 2001. His complete output up to 2021 can be downloaded from the BCPS website. Away from chess Michael had a distinguished career as an economist.

So sad. I enjoyed his book (co-author Barnes & Rice) on Two move chess problems ...., a pioneering British publication. Still have it

Michael Lipton’s wife Merle died earlier this year, and also received an obituary in The Guardian. What a wonderful lifetime partnership!

Happy to have had a chance to interact with Michael last year, as I’ve always admired his writing.

Очень и очень сожалею... Трагически погиб на острие восприятия бытия.
Мы все потеряли тонко чувствующего и поэтому бурно реагирующего творца.
И потеря невосполнима...

Suomen Tehtäväniekat are sorry to announce the passing of our esteemed colleague Kauko Virtanen (25.12.1931 – 24.7.2023).

After publishing his first problem in 1951, he had a distinguished career in problem chess as a composer, organizer, judge and writer.
He held the title of International Judge for 2-movers.

Among his many successes in composing was this example, which proved to be a tough nut for the judges/solvers in the Macleod Whisky Ty - can you crack it?

Beat Züger (3.6.1961 - 4.7.2023)

Beat Züger was a strong over-the-board player who represented Switzerland at many Olympiads. He earned 3 GM norms, but failed to reach the necessary rating for obtaining the title.

For many years, he edited the chess column in Switzerland's most widely read daily newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, where he didn't only comment games, but also many problems; these were mostly reprints, but he managed to mix in originals by the readers and by himself. This led him to place originals in other publications, mainly in Switzerland.

It is reported that Jorge Kapros, the great Argentinian composer, has passed away. Perhaps I am not the best person to write his obituary, but a record, however poor, must be made of the passing of this great composer and even greater human being. Kapros was on his way to becoming the second Latin American grandmaster of chess compositions (the first was his compatriot Arnold Ellerman). His compositions delighted me in the same way as his never absent smile, his irresistible joy, his generous heart. Kapros, even though he was not a compatriot of mine, was one of the people who encouraged me the most in problemism. I think that the reason I love Buenos Aires so much is that there I could meet Kapros, his partner Jorge Lois and Roberto Osorio. I rarely cry, but today morning tears came to my eyes when I heard, through Marjan Kovacevic, the news of his passing. RIP, my and our friend!

This was the sad note Christer Jonsson forwarded on 28.08, from Jorge Lois:

"Unfortunately, Argentine composers are in mourning. Yesterday, 08-27-2023, JORGE KAPROS passed away due to an incurable disease. He had undergone surgery on August 16, but his death occurred due to multiple complications. For me Jorge (Kapros) was like a brother, but he is no longer with us".

It was great opportunity to meet Jorge Kapros during Rio WCCC 2009. Not many words were exchanged, but one day he suddenly came to tell that of all candies in Rio I should find "Garota" sweets to bring home ...

I couldn't go to the congress in Rio. But with the help of Georgy Evseev, I was able to chat with Jorge Capros via Skype.
And I still remember his smile and kindness... I hope that Argentinean friends will organize an international memorial tournament...
