I know nothing about selfmates, and it turns out I'd remembered the Codex wrong. It says:

 QUOTE
Footnote 14A: In non-helpplay compositions alternative black moves are not normally considered duals but may be seen as artistic defects.

So I guess the same principle could be taken to apply to "inevitables" of different kinds.

I have heard that it was a hard struggle going around that footnote. The one who told me about it said that "may be seen as an artistic defect" was something he could live with because if a judge is completely convinced that alternative black moves are a defect then you wont be able to force him to judge any other way.
The sad result is that there is hardly any selfmate with alternative black moves in the FIDE album. Although the footnote can easily be interpreted the way I do, some judges just generally deduct a point for that.

As design space is used up by composers across all genres, we need to find more. There are several directions where it can be found. One popular location is the fairy world, where many leading composers such as Petko Petkov & Chris Feather have gone. Good for them, but for the most part I don't find that fairy compositions excite me. Instead, I am interested more in playing with the rules and conventions. In some cases, this involves relaxing conventions thematically in order to find the design space on the other side. As long as the relaxation is thematic, I can see no defensible grounds for objection.
