Bedrich Formánek 90 JT

The jubilee tourney of Bedrich Formánek, Honourary President of WFCC, is announced at the website of Slovak organisation: https://soks.sk/vypisanie-jt-formanek-90/

For your convenience, here is the English version:

The Slovak organisation for chess composition announces a jubilee tourney to celebrate the 90th birthday of Bedrich Formánek (born 6th June 1933) for threemovers composed according to the rules of shatranj (old Arabic chess). The use of Queens and Bishops is not allowed, but instead composers must use the Fers (1:1 Leaper) and the Alfil (2:2 Leaper) in any number. A pawn on the last rank can promote only to a Fers. Pawn double-steps as well as castlings are not allowed. Compositions can end equally well in mate or stalemate. Illegal positions are also permitted.

Compositions with any stipulation using a retro-motif (including proof games) are a special addition to the tourney, but these must have legal positions.

The compositions should be sent on or before 1st May 2023 by e-mail to laco.packa@gmail.com. The judge is Bedrich Formánek. Cash and book prizes will be awarded in the tourney (to be specified later). The preliminary result will be published at the European Solving Championship, Bratislava, in June 2023.

EDIT 22.3.2023: director change due to illness of the originally announced director. Consequently, the new director is no longer judge.

EDIT 9.4.2023: SOKS has decided that the first prize will be 90 euro, other prizes will be books.

It is mandatory to use both Fers and Alfil, or only one of these types is allowed as well?

My guess is that this formulation was intended to say that (modern) queen and bishop are not allowed and instead (their archaic versions) fers and alfil should be used.

There's a double-step rule for fers, I think it's for the first move. Is that a modern rule or was it already present in the 'shatranj-age'?

I have consulted both question with Bedrich and here are his answers.

Q1: It is mandatory to use both Fers and Alfil, or only one of these types is allowed as well?

A1: It is permissible to use only one type, but priority will be given to compositions with fers and alfil together (any number, any colour).

Q2: There's a double-step rule for fers, I think it's for the first move. Is that a modern rule or was it already present in the 'shatranj-age'?

A2: The fers may move one square diagonally. I have never heard of a fers being able to double-step in shatranj.

From 'Selbstmatt-Miniaturen/Reflesmatt-Miniaturen', chapter 2:

Nach mittelalterlicher Konvention war der Königin in ihrem ersten Zug von ihrem Ausgangsfeld (d1/d8) as ein Sprung in ein freies übernächstes Feld gestattet, aber das nur als Begleitung eines Zuges mit dem König (=Doppelzug). [..] In Ableitung der lombardischen Regel, König und Königin in 'einem' Zug springen zu lassen, existierte der alleinige Ferssprung bis ins 16. Jahrhundert"

So there was a double-jump rule for an original fers until the 16th century, but no mentioning when this rule was introduced.

Answer from Bedrich:

"In the history of medieval chess, various modifications of the rules can be found. The rules of old Arabic chess (shatranj) should apply in this tourney. I know several dozen mansubas, but I have not encountered any modifications in them."
