Meeting in Fujairah

The WFCC meeting in Fujairah, before it starts, already boasts impressive numbers. 45 countries will be represented there and the number of participants is already approaching 400. The composition of these numbers involves significant symbolism, which could make this meeting one of the most memorable, if not the most memorable in the history of problemism.

The massive representation of India and Arab countries makes this event not only a milestone concerning people coming together through chess, but also a reunion of chess with its history. We all know the essential role of the Arabs in the scientific development and dissemination of chess since the Middle Age. A. Saidy and N. Lessing (in The World of Chess) claim that "the conquest of Persia by Islam was the most important development in the history of chess".

The Arabs are also responsible for the creation and dissemination of various legends and stories about the origin of chess, which, according to them, was born in India. The Hindu word chaturanga gave rise to the Persian chaturanj, which in turn gave rise to the Arabic shatranj. And from Arabic came the Spanish "ajedrez" and the Portuguese "xadrez". As Jorge Borges said, in his well-known poem "Ajedrez", "In the East its war was set ablaze, of which the amphitheater today is the whole Earth".

As if all this were not enough, the Arabs also wrote the first books and composed the first chess problems, the famous "mansubat".

On the other hand, India, in recent decades, has recovered its historical importance in the emergence of chess and has become one of the greatest powers in modern chess, and not just in the "overboard play", with its several dozen grandmasters. Also in the composition of problems and in solving, the Indians have been gaining an enormous space. At the Fujairah meeting, they will have the second largest representation, behind only the host country.

I confess my emotion as the day of the beginning of this historic meeting in the United Arab Emirates approaches, in just four days. Despite the great distance between my Rio de Janeiro and Fujairah, this is the Congress that I would not miss for anything in the world. Provided that I can safely and quickly come back to Brazil to watch the Football World Cup on TV!...

And I cannot fail to express my appreciation, admiration and gratitude for the irreplaceable people who did the most to make this magnificent event possible. I believe that Marjan Kovacevic and Julia Vitsoka deserve recognition from the entire international community of problemists for their fantastic work. I speak especially of Marjan, whom I know better. In my view, there is no person in the wider world of chess (not just among the problemists) who is more capable of bringing people together and fostering harmony than he is. Not only in his country, but internationally as well.

And I would like to show here a great recent work of art of him, which, I feel, expresses in a certain way, his human qualities. This h#3.5, which deserved fourth place in the E section of WCCT 2019-2021, pleases me a lot. I would especially like to highlight here, not only the wonderful artistic content, but also the material economy harmonized with the use of the entire board. It is easy to see that the position is unique, it is not possible to move the diagram one column to the right or to the left, nor one row up or down. The position of all pieces, including the WK, is unique. The entire board and all the pieces connect, just as the whole world will come together in Fujairah to celebrate the art of chess composition.

Very large number of registered participants are unheard of at all in the world of chess composition. Unique, indeed. And strange, to say it neutrally.

Indeed Julia and Marjan have been very active and helpful to us.

Four of us from India are travelling to reach there. Other Indian participants registered are obviously UAR residents. Would be happy to meet them.

The organisers kindly got our Visas on credit! 😊🤔, probably unheard of previously.

Thanks Marcos for a truly inspiring post. I wish I could join you folks this year. I hope you all have a wonderful time. Thanks to all who have worked so hard to make this happen. And Marjan’s helpmate is sheer poetry. Gens Una Sumus

Apart from the UAE people, none of the 'new' countries joined the solving competitions, nor the composition tourneys, as far as I can see in the awards. Will this be a one-time joining because the meeting was in an Arab country, or can we expect those new countries to join the next time?

Their citizens participated in the blitz tourney held after the WCCC events were over. The registration for this was in the same website.
