Tel-Aviv 100

The first Hebrew city in modern times celebrates its centenary this year. It has always been in the heart of chess (and chess composition) life in Israel. Its municipal chess club even brought up some of the country’s most established composers (Ofer Comay, Amatzia Avni, Gady Costeff and yours truly…) thus it is just natural that this special anniversary will be commemorated by an International tourney for composing endgame studies. There is no set theme. Judge: G. Costeff. Prize-fund: 400 Euros courtesy the Municipal chess center in Tel-Aviv as well as chess composition books. Entries on normal diagrams or by specifying the exact initial squares of the pieces (no database files of any kind, please) with solutions in the normal algebraic notation, should be sent by September 1st 2009 to: Amatzia Avni, 9 Oranim st., Givaat Shmuel 54052 Israel. E-mail: avniam@zahav.net.il The provisional award will be published by the beginning of 2010.

"no database files of any kind, please"

What does it mean exactly ?
no study with 6 pieces or less ?
no study with 7 pieces for those kinds that have data files (tablebases)?
Other computer help allowed ?

Thank you to explain all that, Yoh'anan

I think, he meant the format: No PGN, CBF, CBH etc.
So I must ask: Is PDF file ok?

Siegfried is right. Entries with any number of pieces are welcome .It is just about the technique of sending the entries in a simple format and normal notation. PDF is also fine.

Anyway, Jacques, if you know G.Costeff's attitude towards studies with 6 pieces, you'd better refrain yourself from sending them to him.

For the historical info, Tel Aviv was founded on April 11, 1909 and later fusioned with Jaffa to become Tel Aviv-Jaffa. The name "Tel Aviv" means "hill of spring".

For the chess info, Gady seems to prefer (at least in his compositions) economical studies with geometrical manoeuvres or promotion tasks.

Best,
Siegfried

All studies and styles are welcome, including the "database" variety.

I evaluate what the composer added, to a database position or to a previous study.
So there is plenty of scope for success in any style.

Happy new year!

Gady

A rich city? come on, who gave you this idea? rich in culture and tradition perhaps but chess is still financially quite poor in Israel and the silver medal in Dresden olympiad doesn't seem to change much.I might shock you by telling that this is probably going to be the only chess event to celebrate the city's centenary. As someone who was born in Tel-Aviv (in a poor neighbourhood by the way...) I could not let it happen. Corus-70 arose your apetite I guess, but where else can you find a much larger prize fund in composing tourneys?
We still hope to see you all on the participants list!let spirit beat matter!

I agree. Certainly you speak it is correct. But you also know the difficulties chess creative activity. To my mind, the funds forms one, have charge of prestige of the country, city. The good fund will give the high level of the contest.
Good luck!
