Midrag Mladenović - The Problemist 1989-1990 - Babson TT - 1st Pr. [r#3]
I want to show you my best problem (my personal opinion). I composed so far 307 problems but this one is I think the best one. Somehow everything worked well together so I was very happy when I composed this problem. On the top of everhything there was an article in "The Problemist" stating that it's impossible to make babson task in r#3 and that mininmum number of required moves for reflex mates is 4. However I found prefect mechanism that proved that impossible is sometimes possible.
I would recommend that everyone shows their own best problem in their opinion. That way we are all going to see some very nice problems.
The goal of white is to make BK move from 7th rank to make black bishop from b7 to mate on f3. However to achieve this white has to worry not to mate black. So two tries are failing because of reflex refutations:
Now black can pin wBd1 to prevent Bxf3. However white can promot to R,Q and capture bPf3 because wB is pinned. There is dual avoidance theme between two variations:
1...b1R 2.f8R+ K~ 3.Rxf3 Bxf3# (2.f8Q++? Ke6 3.Qhf5#)
1...b1Q 2.f8Q++ Ke6 3.Qxf3 Bxf3# (2.f8R+? Qxh7!)
All together it's Babson task in r#3.
1...Kd7 2.f8S++ K~ 3.Bxf3 Bxf3#
1...Sa~ 2.f8S+ K~ 3.Bxf3 Bxf3# (unfortunatelly I had to put bSa1 to prevent cook)
