#18 For 18 Years

As my gift unto MatPlus for today, I present a shorter rendition. The main reason is that Costeff made the first such problem in the now defunct MatPlus magazine.

Well, that and it's my birthday today as of posting on the 27th my time. :-)

There is only one small defect I haven't been able to fix.

With further analysis, I finally found the flaw. It is corrected with an exodus. It also turns out the key wasn't as unique as I thought, requiring an additional pawn.

1. Be6? 17... Kh7!

1. Bf7! g1=Q+ 2. Rxg1 fxg1=Q+ 3. Kxg1 e1=Q+ 4. Kh2 Qg1+ 5. Kxg1 e2+ 6. Kh2 Qg1+ 7. Kxg1 e1=Q+ 8. Kh2 Qg1+ 9. Kxg1 d1=Q+ 10. Kh2 Qg1+ 11. Kxg1 c1=Q+ 12. Kh2 Qg1+ 13. Kxg1 b1=Q+ 14. Kh2 Qg1+ 15. Kxg1 a1=Q+ 16. Kh2 Qg1+ 17. Kxg1 Nf2,Nxg3 18. Ng6#

Now flawlessly presented in eight promoted Black queens in eighteen moves; this is two moves shorter than Costeff. Additional features are the sacrifice of a ninth Black queen, a battery mate, and a very late refuatation.
