Why? Should?

Let's take a constructional task. e.g. 'find a position with maximum number of checks' (this is not a retro problem as retros look backwards, this one looks forward). Take this constructional problem or a mathematical chess problem or a help play to a dead position. These, and many others, are non-fairy problems, but they have no group in e.g. FIDE Album competitions. This raises two questions:

1) Why are FIDE Album competitions limited to only direct mates, studies, helpmates, selfmates, retros and fairies?

2) Should all chess problems have an equal opportunity to be offered to FIDE Album competitions?

Guess: Those are the categories for which there are International Judges of Chess Compositions (or should there be a FIDE somewhere inside that title?)

Reality check: There are judges for math problems as well.

2) Should all chess problems have an equal opportunity to be offered to FIDE Album competitions?

Seems like the requirement of a competent judge is fairly reasonable one. (I'm assuming that Album judges are IJCC's.) In that case, it looks like adding new sections would be a matter of changing the title statues, as they currently only allow for the sections '2#, 3#, n#, s#, h#, fairies, endgames, retros and mathematics'.

But I see no clear (theoretical) reason why math problems should not be eligible.

There may be a practical one, though: in the current list of judges I only find three math problem judges: Hans Gruber, Werner Keym, and Günter Lauinger. Three judges are too few. If they should not be available, ...

Question 3: Should FIDE/WFCC and national federations promote math problem tourneys judged by 'national judges' (for want of a better term) to help recruit new international judges of math problem?

@ Per: If I were on your shoes, I would send such "other" entries to the fairies section.

I have not understood: did you send some entries in the past and they were rejected by a section director? I am not aware of it.

The number of composers and judges in the field you described is very small and an individual section for such compositions cannot be justified. The best option is the fairies section as I wrote above.

@ Anders: Judges in the album are not required to have the IJ title. The basic criteria for the selection are how knowledgeable they are in the field they are asked to work and how old they are (we usually avoid selecting persons over 70 years old).

This is an issue that I look upon from a theoretical point of view, no practical inconvenience from the past. Appreciating exact definitions and expressions I would say that it looks like two sections in the Album competitions could have another title: 1) The Retros group is actually Retros and Fairy retros 2) The Fairies section is Fairies excluding Fairy retros + non-fairy problems that are not direct mates, studies, helpmates, selfmates or retros. These start to be clumsy expressions, can perhaps, if exactness is desired, be handled by subtitles and/or description in the announcement.

Hello, Harry!

You say that an Album judge need not be an IJC. Is this a recent change?
Because, I remember back in the 90s, Klaus Wenda asked me to be a judge for the fairies section. After I accepted, He said there was a problem since I wasn't an IJC yet! And yes.. I wasn't over 70 either.. ;-)

@shankar ram: None of the judges for the fairies section in the FA 2001-03 was IJC at that time.

Thanks for that information, Vlaicu!
I suppose the rules were changed later..
