Miodrag Mladenović - two reflexmates

Yesterday, Hannu published a "Handbook of Chess Composition" in PDF format at PCCC site. Very nice and in my opinion useful booklet.

While browsing through booklet I found out that one of my faries problem has been removed from FA 1998-2000 selection. I am not sure why and I am wondering if somebody can give me an explanation. Unfortunately I cannot remember who was director of this section. During this period I published only two faries that I am going to list here:

Miodrag Mladenović
(= 11+13 )

R#3

1.a7! [2.a8R ~ 3.Ra2 bxc2#]
(2.a8Q+? c6! 3.Qa2? bxc2?)

1...Kd4 2.Sf3+ K~ 3.Sxd2 Sxd2#
(2.a8R? Rxe5 3.Qc4#)

1...Kc5 2.Se4+ ~ 3.Sxd2 Sxd2#
(2.a8R? Rxd6 3.Qc4#)

1...Kxd6 2.Sc4+ K~ 3.Sxd2 Sxd2#
(2.a8R? Re7 3.Qxe7#)

1...Kxe5 2.Sc4+ K~ 3.Sxd2 Sxd2#
(2.a8R? Rxf6 3.Qxf6#)

1...c5 2.a8Q+ K~ 3.Qa2 bxc2#
(2.a8R? Rd4 3.Qxe6#)

This problem has been composed in 1993 for TT of "The Problemist". The theme requirement was that black is defending himself by threating white to checkmate black. This problem does containt five thematic variations with crosses of bK+bR.

The second problem I composed for the same tournament but for some reasons judge thought that it's non-thematic problem. However I think it's still a good R#:

Miodrag Mladenović
Comm. The Problemist 2000
(= 7+9 )

R#4

1.f6![2.f7 ~ 3.f8R ~ 4.Rxf1 e,gxf1Q#]
1...c1S [2.f7? a1R! 3.f8R? Ra5! 4.b8S#]
2.g8B ~ 3.Bc4+ Ka5 4.Bxe2 Sxe2#
(2...Ka5 3.Bc4 Sd3 4.Bf2 gxf2#)

I could put wPg7->g6 and remove wPf5 with keymove 1.g7! and threat 2.g8R ~ 3.Rf8 ~ 4.Rxf1. However I liked more having and extra pown on 5th row that is playing a keymove even if there is a pown on the 7th row.

On the PCCC site it's still listed that I have to faries problem selected for FA 1998-2000. However Hannu confirmed for me that there is only one problem that he did get from FA editors. So now I am wondering which problem is removed from selection and why? The preliminary results were published more then two year ago (April 2005). I am wondering why the preliminary results have not been corrected in the meantime. Also, I know that some titles were awarded based on the preliminary results. I do not understand how that can be done if there is possibility that some problems will be removed from the selection later on.

Edit: Initially the first diagram was incorrectly quoted, with the black Bg8 instead of the white one.

Misha, I like the second one better than the first. Regarding your choice of key, from the solvers view your key choice is better but artistically (I rarely solve a problem outside solving tourneys) promotion of the same pawn to different minor pieces appeals more to me. The problem seems quite thematic according to the definition you gave.

The director of the 1998-200 Fairies section was Christian Poisson.

Something wrong with first position? Popeye says that 1.Sc6 works too!

Obviously, something is wrong with the black bishops (otherwise Misha would have made a remark). From the motivations given for the black king moves, we can deduce that Bg8 has to be white.

Thank you Paul and Thomas, it's obviously the white bishop on g8.

The position in original post has "a posteriori" been corrected by Administrator.
