New Series Tournament

Hi,

A new tournament is being organized.

If you are interested to know more, all the informations about it can be found at:

http://ifaybish.com/tournament7

Although it will be in the spirit of the previous ones, there will be an important change that will be explained at the start.

As always, it is a lot of fun, creative thoughts, and beautiful ideas.

All are welcomed and encouraged to give it a try!

Best regards,
Itamar.

Hi Itamar, I looked in the announcement of this tournament and I could not find anywhere email address where the problems should be send. I tried some old email address but it did not work. Can you please update announcement and list email address where original should be send?

I'd be remiss not to ask: is Parry Series allowed? :-)

(= 2+2 )

pser-h=3 (2+2) C+ VMC

1.Sf7+ Kg6 2.Sh8+ Bxh8 3.Kxh8[Bf1] Bc4=

Hi Dan,

Nice problem :)

There are five stipulations that can be used, but not Parry. I thought about including it in the previous tournament, but after testing a few problems, it seemed if I remember well that it took too long to C+ validate them.

Maybe I choose the wrong "test" problems, in that case my mistake. Those tournaments demand a relatively high certainty that the problems are correct in a rapid way.

All that said, the latest tournament may prove "problematic" in that sense, as the main idea forces many pieces cooperation, which is not ideal for testing programs. Thus there will probably be non C+ problems, and so including the Parry familly may have been ok after all from that perspective.

Nevertheless there are some important differences between the Parry series and non Parry series, thus not sure they can be used together in the same categories for those type of tournaments. Probably the non Parry's would have quite an advantage (I may be wrong).

Thinking about it as I write now this post, maybe a good idea is indeed to open a new category only for Parry series problems, following the exact same idea. Thus five mirror stipulations given, but for Parry only. Should be very interesting too.

As it is just the beginning of the tournament, I do not see a problem with this. And the participants probably won't either.

Best regards,
Itamar.

@Itamar: Very good. Guess I better *contribute* something now. :-) VMC is well out of my composing kit, so this'll be a challenge.

Parry Series do have some strategic advantages, but testing will be longer (unit-for-unit, move-for-move) compared to normal series. Best to keep them separate here, as you suggest. You are planning to update the tournament page, yes?

@Itamar -- Alas, the deadline has come and gone. The closest I came to a qualifying entry is the following:

DM original, "to the ifaybish.com 7TT!"
(= 2+7 )

ser-!=38 (2+7) C? VMC { solution hidden below }
10.Kxc8[+bSb8] 11.Kxb8[+bSg8] 15.Kxf8[+bBc8] 17.Kxh8[+bRa8] 18.Kxh7[+bPa7] 19.Kxg8[+bSb8] 23.Kxc8[+sBf8] 25.Kxa8[+bRh8] 26.Kxb8[+bSg8] 37.Kg6 38.g5!=

Don't know how many 'points' this would've earned by the tourney specs (had != forms been allowed), but I liked the back-and-forth rebirths at any rate. :-) I was able to test a 22-move version of this (C+), so there's a reasonable chance for soundness here.

This was not close as it even does not use a valid stipulation... Allowed were only ser-h#, ser-h=, ser-h!=, ser-hs# and ser-hs=. However, the idea of the problem is nice. By the way, with the above links you will also be led to the results of that tournament...
