A Manhattan Chess Club mystery

 QUOTE
In the Manhattan Chess Club there is a picture of an old man apparently trying to solve a chess problem. The position on his board is:
(= 7+3 )

(from "The Weekly", 7th November 1908)

The problem is seemingly a mate in 4 with the solution:
1.Be4 f5 2.Ke1!! f4 3.f3 Ke3 4.Sf5 mate
or 2...fxe4 3.Kd2/Ke2 e3(+) 4.fxe3 mate

Who is the author of this problem and what is the source?
