Can you find the theme? (Josten 1992) I leave it up to you to find the theme of the following problem. I'd like to know if anyone is able to find it.
(= 12+12 )
Gerhard Josten

I would say "correspondence of nature of the pieces between defences and mate"
So called "Balbo" theme in France.
In a certain point of vue you can include the Bishop variation as a thematic one though it does not really parry the threat : The key controls a square and so threatens a mate, the black Bishop undo this control, so may be seen as a defense, but provokes the control of the same square by another white, and then provokes the same mate. |

I think you found it.
When it was first published the solvers were not able to find the theme. Are there more examples of it? |

But in this one not all black pieces move to the same field. Is there any of these? |

Last year I wrote a little article for the german journal Problem-Forum concerning the Balbo.
Here you find the text as PDF (in German, but the content may be clear for all):

By the way: Who knows why the theme is called "Balbo"? |

In the namr of Gaston Balbo, who was a french problemist fond of new things ideas and themes.
He invented lots of things, but nowadays, his name is recalled mainly for this theme. |

In the problem of Erwin Groß (Frank Richter shows it in his article, PDF) the theme is called Anti-Balbo:
http://winchloe.free.fr/themes.html
QUOTE At least 3 tries made by pieces of different nature are refuted by moves made by pieces of the same nature than the key piece of the try.
Balbo is defined as:
QUOTE At least 3 defences made by pieces of different nature are followed by moves made by pieces of the same nature than the defending unit.
Well, I think there are balbo theme (as given above) and Balbo task (with all six pieces - or even more in fairy chess), same for Anti-Balbo.
A little offtopic but I found the chess variant "Balbo chess" very interesting (and the computer is weak enough so I could win, sadly it makes bad mistakes).

I planned a Balbo liaison (<- extremely clever Stanislaw Lem innuendo :-)
for one of the next "Problem Forum" issue but yikes! The Valve problem
more or less anticipates it. (I did it in Fleck form)
Hauke
EDIT: Forgot to highlight - in the Josten problem Bxd2 doesn't parry the threat,
marring the feature... |

Once I saw something about Theme Balbo in a book by Joaquim Valladão Monteiro called "Mate em Dois - 222 Temas", but I believe that Frank Richter's article spare the search for this item, as Valladão surelly just presented one of the Problems from the "O Globo" 1960 contest - I find very enlightening to compare Almiro Zarur's number two in Frank's article with G F Anderson's from 1946 presented above by Michael McDowell, because both presents complete six variations Balbos with very different approaches.
* Anti-Balbo - almost every #2 can be an Anti-Balbo 'sans le savoir'...

"Once I saw something about Theme Balbo in a book by Joaquim Valladão Monteiro called "Mate em Dois - 222 Temas" - - - Well, it arrives that the Balbo presented there, in 1967, is:
