28th TT Chess Composition Microweb CCM has just announced just another edition of the traditional theme tourney.
Theme: ecto-battery.
Ecto-battery is the activation of line by move not starting and not ending on the line. Usual forms are:
- locust capture freeing the line of check or guard
- Anticirce capture on the line activating it (similar is Kamikaze capture on the line)
- Circe rebirth of hurdle on the hopper line activating it, after capture somewhere else
Other forms are possible.
Deadline 10.10.2010, judge Juraj Lorinc.
More on the announcement page: http://jurajlorinc.tripod.com/chess/ann28tt.htm
Many examples are already published at CCM and more special example files to come. |

As reported by interested people, there is broken link from the announcement page to the Marianka bulletin containing on pages 82-90 some further ecto-battery examples and award of Marianka tourney for ecto-batteries. So here is the link to the SOKS page where you can find the bulletin. I will correct that on CCM when I get to my source CCM files.

Edit: It should work now on the announcement page. |

Definition question)))
(= 2+2 )
0...e5 1. fe+ e.p.
Is this considered ectobattery by suggested definition?
(by traditional definition, this is not a kind of battery at all) |

Yes, as far as I know this is the only possible ecto-battery using the orthodox rules. (This by the way makes ecto-battery closer to orthodox chess than anti-battery as there is no anti-battery possible in orthodox.) |

During the tourney I have received quite a few questions about ecto-batteries. Thus I have tried to give slightly more precise explanations about my understanding of the concept.

My hope is that in the future somebody (more able to write theoretical articles than me) would prepare consistent theory. |

http://jurajlorinc.tripod.com/chess/ann28tt.htm#award (introduction)
http://jurajlorinc.tripod.com/chess/ccm28t_o.htm (actual award)
Hopefully I've not made any mistakes, but if yes, please, let me know. |
