BMJC COMPOSING TOURNEY: “NEWOTNYS”

To mark the 80th birthdays in 2017 of four of its members, Barry Barnes, Michael Lipton, John Rice and Colin Sydenham, all of them probably best known for their 2-move compositions, the BCPS is running a composing tourney for orthodox direct-mate 2-movers featuring “Newotnys”, i.e. something new in the Nowotny field, on its own (for example, a task record) or in combination with some other currently popular theme. The example below shows the Barnes theme arising from a Nowotny by White’s first try, with its two threats separated by the second try and the key, each cutting only one of the thematic lines. Entries using non-orthodox force, boards or conditions are not acceptable. Intending competitors may like to consult one of the databases available online with multiple examples of 2-move themes, to assist in the search for originality.

Judge:Wieland Bruch.

Entries to the Tourney Director Michael McDowell: <mmcdchess@freeuk.com>,

Closing date for submission: 30th June 2018.

Prizes in the form of cash and/or books will be awarded to the highest-placed entries.

Joint compositions and twins are fine.

There is no restriction on the number of entries per composer.

There are so many reasons to take part in this modestly announced tourney, and to celebrate contribution of the great British quartet to our Art: their compositions, books, articles, editing, judging, social activities, PCCC services...
With a group toast to all of them (is Scotch appropriate?), I would ask these 4 gentlemen if allowing me to call them "The Beatles of #2"?
Well, being almost the same generation as The Beatles (3-6 years older), they successfully did many similar things, and in about the same era. They brilliantly exported British composition all around the World; they introduced some revolutionary changes (towards multi-phase #2); and they took care of noble standards, while managing amazing productivity and social impact (forget hair style, drugs and screaming)...
Yes, Colin joined later, like Ringo did, but right in the time to give the band a fresh touch. As about the three writers of the fabulous "The two-move chess problem" (Rice, Lipton & Barnes - Faber, 1966), I've always wondered who really wrote it: John, Paul or George??

Not to be confused with the Sowhatny, ~4400 alone in the Albrecht collection :P
(I wanted to add a Beatles pun, but you can't do that)

The Four Musketeers or Beatles... which is more appropriate?

Well, the French musketeers had some drawbacks, being neither British, nor writers or composers who gave some joy to the rest of the world. Besides, I've never met them :)

True, the musketeers are after all fiction and not connected to art !!

After DLing:
Methinks it might be a good idea to list all definitions of
Oldwotnys here in the thread; eg. seems I never heard of a
Norwegian Nowotny. (Not in Degeners #2 lexicon, but in
Milans encyclopedia.)

Arrr. I am preparing reprint of the announcement for next Conflictio and have been working on selecting one thematic #2 by each of 4 composers. The presented collection is obviously much more complete (all my 4 choices are there), so I will point to it, thanks!

@ Hauke: Have you searched under "Norwegian wood"?

No, under "Norwegian Lovesong" :-) (Google is not helpful
with such extremely specific stuff; I never bought Milans
book as I'm only a 2# specialist and usually content with
the Degener booklet)
