(on a 3x3 board: b1, c2, a3, b3, c3 would be occupied, or b1, b2, c2, a3, c3 would be occupied - rotations are possible but only in multiples of 90 degrees).

Examples for "glider" patterns. Pattern 1 white, pattern 2 black. Vertical/horizontal mirroring and 90, 180, 270 degree rotations are possible.
The "glider" was invented by Richard K. Guy (1917-2020) for John Conway's (1937-2020) "Game of Life". The rules of the Game of Life don't matter here - they can be read at the link below -, but the "glider" is a self-sustaining pattern that "moves" on the grid of the game, in some cases it can transmit information.

I currently try to organize a small contest for original problems with the "glider" pattern. So please don't "use up" all of them yet. :-)
