other Thingies you shouldn't touch with a ten foot pool lest
everyone goes loggerheads". Such that anyone enticed to
infighting can go there without disturbing the peace elsewhere :-)
I wouldn't even post this since this here will get hotter
than the interior of the Sun, but this time idiocy went too far.
And it has to do with problem chess...remotely :-)
I gladly cede that "social justice warriors" have a point.
They should consider in return if they have the right means.
In this case, observe the Lüneburger Landeszeitung, one of
the few German newspapers which still prints chess problems.
A person with much issues and little clue evidently decided
to let a computer take over correct gendering. (Due to the
peculiarities of German language, this is currently a hot
topic in political culture wars.) Artificial Wokeness,
so to say. Letting a computer taking over anything sensible
is a surefire way to screw up royally.
And so the problem showcased in the last issue may or may
not had had a "Vorgänger" (was anticipated), and the
dumbass programm detected a male form and autocorrected it
to "Vorgänger and Vorgängerin". Yeah, chess problems now have
a gender, that must be the reason why I'm in love with them
(albeit I'm almost strictly hetero :-).
Utter stupidity like this will damage "silent majority's"
support for the real problems of any minority who is at
disadvantage (Sarah Hornecker will immediately assure you
these problems exist). We need practical solutions, not
language warfare. If you name the tail of the dog a leg,
it still has 4 legs - Abraham Lincoln.
END OF RANT | | (2) Posted by Sarah Hornecker [Tuesday, Feb 6, 2024 19:15] | The real issue of the German language is that idiots try to exclude women from general humanity by gendered language, so the generic masculinum is not enough anymore, but women are named extra as if they aren't humans.
In any case, I have no idea what you try to say, so this is the best I think might help you prove your point about me having some knowledge about whatever issues you mean.
Next week we'll learn about Vitaly Kun who is not allowed to be named Vitaly Kunin anymore because that sounds too female. | | (3) Posted by Olaf Jenkner [Tuesday, Feb 6, 2024 22:19] | Carsten Ehlers' short text has been changed by the newspaper in three places:
1) original: "auch für Einsteiger geeignet"
changed: "auch für Einsteigerinnen und Einsteiger geeignet"
The result was this sentence was dropped because the text would be too long.
2) original: "Experten sollten ein klassisches Zweizüger-Thema entdecken"
changed: "Fachleute sollten ein klassisches Zweizüger-Thema entdecken"
The other word is quiet the same and means all genders.
3) original: "... habe keinen Vorgänger gefunden."
changed: "... habe keinen Vorgängerin oder Vorgänger gefunden."
It shows the newspaper is made by idiots. | | (4) Posted by Rosie Fay [Wednesday, Feb 7, 2024 08:34] | Sarah, like any of us, may assure us about whatever matters she chooses. For my part, I would like to assure those who are affected by the problems of gender minorities, and those who support such people, that I am with you.
As for the person from Lüneburg and what effects they had on the local newspaper and its chess column, this seems to be on a par with the result of someone at the BBC who had the job to edit articles for an international readership, and replaced all occurrences of "the Queen" with "Queen Elizabeth" (this is going back several years), thereby making nonsense of an article about beekeeping. I don't blame wokeness in this case. | | (5) Posted by Hauke Reddmann [Wednesday, Feb 7, 2024 09:51] | @Sarah: Your standpoint essentially coincides with the handling of the same issue
in the English language. There, pairs (say actor/actress) were the default,
and -ess forms are now falling out of favor due to the argument that the non-ess
form encompasses all genders. Exactly opposite to the German trend.
Of course, German and English are different in the sense that German has forced
grammatical genders, which complicates things further. | | No more posts |
