There is some mystery about his date of birth. The Chess Composers site gives 1880. http://chesscomposers.blogspot.ca/2012/02/february-16th.html Other sites give 1903. All sources I have found give his date of death as 1981.
There are problems by him on the Chess Problem Database Server and Yet Another Chess Problem Database dated as early as 1904.
His father Harald (1865-1937) was also a chess composer and some of his problems are in the Yet Another Chess Problem Database. One Danish site says that Knud's first problem was a collaboration with his father at age 11. http://problemskak.dk/hanneman.htm
So, was Knud a centenarian? Or did he compose problems when he was one year old? That would be wizardly.
More likely, the databases have attributed some of the father's problems to the son. I think the Danish Wizard book is probably the best reference for Knud's birthdate, and the date of his earliest problems.
Thanks for any help. | | (2) Posted by Harry Fougiaxis [Sunday, Aug 19, 2012 10:12] | I do not have the book, but I can tell you what is recorded in WinChloe:
Harald Hannemann (24-02-1865 , 16-02-1937)
Knud Hannemann (26-02-1903 , 01-05-1981) | | (3) Posted by Michal Dragoun [Sunday, Aug 19, 2012 12:22] | Knud Hannemann writes (p. 9 in book The Danish Wizard): "I was born in Randers, Denmark, on Febr. 16, 1903 ..." | | (4) Posted by Jeff Coakley [Sunday, Aug 19, 2012 15:46] | Thank you, Michal. I thought that 1903 was probably the correct date. I'll send a message to Gerd Wilts at the Chess Problem Database Server about the problems attributed to Knud Hannemann before 1910.
Thanks to Harry too. I didn't know about WinChloe. It sounds like a good program. | | (5) Posted by Eric Huber [Saturday, Aug 25, 2012 15:45] | Thank you Michal (and Jeff for asking). I have corrected the year of birth (1880 -> 1903) on Chess Composers.
