Because of the f5 square in the second solution, I don't think it is an improvement. |

Regardless of square f5 and the fact that now it's not a model mate I like more version. I think it's an improvement because white play is more similar between solutions (1st white move guards square(s), 2nd move is promotion and third move is checkmate by promoted piece). Also it's always nice to have corner mate in helpmate. |

I prefer original position. One piece less, lighter impression, and solutions are also identically in motivation of moves. |

I prefer the version... two different knight moves and both mates by the promoted piece make a better impression.. AND a whole white piece less ! |

My personal taste: without no doubt, I prefer the original version. |

The most thematic original feature is reciprocal anti-dual tempo-play by bRs. Other features look pretty common and the personal tastes may see them differently, so it's wise to respect the authors' preferences.
Economy might be somewhat "objectively" discussed and the "mechanical play" of "extra wB" in the original is not economical, but someone will see it as nice.
What I like in the version is the try which fails due to line opening/closing:
1.Rb4 Sf6? 2.Rb8 axb8Q 3.Ra5+?! Qb2#???
This introduces the need for tempo-losing play.
And with bQf4 instead of bP, White would lack a tempo move:
1.Rb4 ?? 2.Rb8 axb8Q/S 3.Qe4 Qh8/Sc6# |
