A proposal to Messrs. Selivanov and Avner

I propose to contribute a part of FIDE 2010 'chess composition' budget to Milan Velimirovic, the creater and maintainer of matplus.net: the most popular chess problem website in the world. I cannot imagine a better investment of FIDE money that serves a broader community of chess problemists all around the world.

For many of us, visiting matplus.net is part of the daily routine. There are almost 450 registered users, about 100 unique visitors every day. We use provided services for granted, while Milan alone bears the costs of developing and maintaining this website. I am sure even a modest support and recognition of Milan's efforts will be for the greatest good of this community.

Many chess problem fans are upset with ongoing FIDE-ICCU conflict. The positive decision on this matter will not only serve Milan directly but would be a sign of good will on behalf of the whole chess problem community.

Please, if you agree with me, be vocal in your support!

That would be a good investment!

Jan GOLHA and his indispensable website, and also Andrej SELIVANOV, could also be candidates for a financial support from the ICCU.

Yes, really a good idea.
Not to forget Gerd Wilts, maintaining the PDB online.

I support all of the above 100%. And I would add Vaclav Kotesovec's website, which is a wonderful archive of chess-problem publications, many otherwise unobtainable.

What should I say? I also had such an idea myself but was quite sure that FIDE and PCCC would not spend money for internet issues of "third parties" unless they can convince the third party to become more favorable to them. While the reasoning behind this idea is understandable, the bad point is that it somehow would have a bad smell as if they want to persuade Milan with some money to sooner or later stop critical comments (which would make like half of my comments being blocked, including this one).

How about everyone of us pays an additional 50 or so Euro to Milan once in appreciation for his investments (not only in money but also in time - he wrote the whole website code himself) instead? Or just everyone subscribes to MatPlus Review? :-)

So a support here, but only if independence of matplus.net (and the magazines) is still guaranteed.

It's easy to click on "Reply" and say you agree that FIDE should pay. Siegfried's idea is much better: everyone should subscribe to Mat Plus Review. However, parting with your own money is not so easy.

Personally I am subscriber of Mat Plus Review. However I do not see anything wrong with this idea. If I remember good there was $7000 allocated from FIDE last year for PCCC. I think that it’s good for chess problemists to invest that money in all web sites that are popularizing chess problems. That’s happening in other sports too.

I agree with Geoff and Misha both! FIDE *and* individuals should be financially supporting worthy websites. Personally, this would be rather difficult for me, since I survive just on a pension (due to ill health).

Furthermore, Siegfried makes an excellent point: any 'official' funding would have to be completely 'at arm's length' - no strings attached.

:)) Lot of websites, but who can read them all? Now I remember Sebastian Beetz's proposal: Let's go to pub to solve problems and drink some beer! How many beer for 7.000 euros? :)))))

It would be the best to subscribe yourself and one of your friends as well. But it's pretty much available now through group subscriptions.

Unfortunately, it seems, Milan is still far enough from reaching a target to self-finance the magazine not even mentioning the website.

There are many good websites on chess problems but the uniqueness of MatPlus is in its community. I wish as an experiment Milan shut down it for several weeks so we could better appreciate its true value.
