Two-move challenge Can anyone compose a two-mover where three Schiffmann defences on square A are followed by three mates on square B?
I have done it (and even thrown in a fourth Schiffmann, with mate on square C), but with an unacceptable key. Attempts at an orthodox setting seem to fail because there is always one flight which cannot be covered.
I’d be interested to see if anyone can do it properly. |

The following problem surely deserves to be better known:
J.E.Funk
Chess Amateur, December 1928
(= 9+7 )
Mate in 2
1.Qe2 (>2.d3)
1...Rxe4 2.d4
1...Qxe4 2.Sxd4
1...Sxe4 2.Bxd4
1...R/Sd3 2.Qd1
1...Rxd2 2.Qxd2
I like the way the two by-play variations arise naturally. Surprisingly, none of the CA solvers mentioned the mates on the same square.
A disappointment for Hauke, who discovered the same matrix. |

Someone else discovered the same matrix in 1912 http://www.yacpdb.org/#26213 (Found today searching for Schiffmann + Albino) |

The problem is interesting for its date. I wasn't aware of any problem showing a Schiffmann defence earlier than Anderson's 1917 Good Companions problem.
Hope you found 205822 in yacpdb. I'd be interested to know of other examples. |

Of course I found Yours 1983 S+A - it's a fine composition, Michael! What about L Kubbel "Swiat Szachowy" 1929 1R6/8/1b3BpK/3pq3/5N2/pr1B1p2/bk1P1R2/N3Q3 #2 !? |

Some pin mates, but what's do the engine recognize as a Schiff??! Maybe 1...Qc3, but this is not a self-pin, just a movement of an already pinned piece (The same about Flood & Fletcher "The Problemist" 1963 g1/e2) |

@Zalmen: A movement of an already pinned piece IS a Schiffmann (2nd form)
if the threat now fails by unpin and the mate uses the pin. |

Consider buying the Degener ("Von Ajec bis Zappas"), a compendium
of #2 themes, which (unlike the Breuer) fits into any jacket :-) |
