January 4th - International Day of Chess Composition Today, January 4th, is the International Day of Chess Composition. Today we can make a wish. I have already made mine. I will, in due time, inform when it has come true. |

I'd forgotten about this date, but remembered when I noticed all the people on the bus this morning with their pocket sets out. |

Indeed, a good one! The best joke of the year so far…can anybody improve? Otherwise the prize goes to Neal. The prize is a trip to Hawaii…that the winner herself / himself has to buy. |

The only wish I could think of is to move the chess composition day to the last weekend of this month when two major solving events will take place: The Tata Steel studies day in Wijk Aan Zee on Saturday 28th and the ISC all over the globe (WAZ included) om Sunday 29th.
Announcing a special day while doing nothing to fill it with contents is enough bad joke thus no need to create even sadder ones... |

Zagreb, Croatia
Yesterday we held solving tournament on the occasion of International Chess Composition Day 2012.
At first we imagined it as the solvers prepare for the ISC, but it is now the tournament support the ISC and prepare for a better time.
Three rookies and a solver with no rating have participated in the tournament.
After the tournament we have analyzed the problems, toasted with champagne and enjoy the Loshinsky stuff ;)

Happy celebrations, everyone!
I noticed the story isn't here yet why it was the 4th of January specifically. I wrote about that years ago, or only read about it, but it was the birthday of someone who was admired by the inventor of that day. Possibly someone can post the full story?
EDIT: I found it on the WFCC website:

Happy Chess Composition Day!
Ten years ago (WCCC Rhodes, 2007) our organization (PCCC at that time) established the International Day of Chess Composition. According to the proposal by the Grandmaster Valentin Rudenko (1938-2016), today we celebrate an important date in the history of chess composition. On January 4th 1869, the Czech (Bohemian at that time) magazine “Svetozor” published an article by Antonín König (1836-1911), a painter and the founder of the Bohemian school in chess composition. This article is known as one of the earliest sources considering chess composition as an independent form of Art.
