Study: Knight Kicking?

Today my best chess clubs youth was again lambasted after falling
back inro his usual vice of letting his knights be kicked around
by pawns in the opening.
Sounds like a fun study theme. 1.e4 Sd6 2.e5 Sf7 3.e6 Sd8 4.e7 +-
would be a nice variant...if you have a reason why the stupid
donkey can't go elsewhere. "Systematic Movements" were heyday
somewhen in the history of studies, offhand I know an example
K vs S over the whole field, so why not this? Anyone to provide
an actual example?

Thanks, that was *exactly* what I was looking
for (OK, maybe not those where the kickee wins,
that would be bad on the educational part :-)

Just to compare, here is a very wellknown study with Knight vs King

Mark S. Liburkin
Shakhmaty v SSSR 1938 - 1
(= 3+4 )
+

1.Cd4+ Rç3 2.Cb5+ Rç4 3.Cd6+ Rç5 4.Cb7+ Rç6 5.Cd8+ Rç7 6.Cé6+ Rd7 7.Cf8+ Ré7 8.Cg6+ Rf7 9.Ch8+!! Rg7 10.T×é1 R×h8 11.Th1 g3 12.Ré3 Rg7 13.Rf4 g2 14.Tg1 Cf1 15.T×g2+ +-

with 9 times the idea ! and a very nice finish !

Yes, that was the one I briefly referred to.
(Briefly since my Internet is at office and my
study collections at home. Luckily at least
my brain is portable :-)

It is interesting that Korolkov found another interesting position but with only half the manoeuvre.

(= 5+6 )

V. A. Korolkov
Sverdlovsk Ty, Uralski Rabotchi 1946 (correction)

The original study had wBd6, wRb8, bRb3 and bPh4, but Korolkov must have found something faulty with that. Maybe he wasn't convinced about 2.Rg6. (1.Rg8 h3 2.Bh2 Rf3 etc.)

1.Bh2 Rf2 2.Sg5 g1Q+ 3.Bxg1 Rf1+ 4.Kc2 Rxg1 5.Ra8+ Kb6 6.Sxh3 b3+! 7.Kd2 Rg2+ 8.Kc1 Rc2+ 9.Kb1
(= 4+4 )

9...Rh2 10.Sg1 Rg2 11.Sf3 Rf2 12.Se1 Re2 13.Sd3 Rd2 14.Sc1 Rd1 15.Ra3 Kc5 16.Rxb3 wins.

However, I'm not fully convinced here. Why not 5...Kb5? If the game goes on as in the main variation, black has a positional draw. So white must try to improve by 12.Sd4+ Kb4! 13.Rc8 (see diagram) but is that won? If yes, it will at least become very difficult for white.

(= 4+4 )

Black to move

Also, in the main variation:
2...b3 3.Rc8 Rf1+ 4.Rc1 Rh1 5.Sf3 wins, but black can play stronger by 4...Kb5. However, here white still should win by 5.Sxh3! Rh1 6.Rg1! Rxh2 7.Sf2 (or 6.Sf2 Rxh2 7.Rg1!) and activation of his king. Note the fine difference - Pg2 is bad for black!

Even though it is blasphemy, I suggest adding a wPb6 to avoid the Kb5 variation (white can play knight to c1 as in the main variation, then Ra3 Kb4, Ra7 Kb5, Rxb7 and winning with the surviving Pb6).
