Olympiad winner moremovers 1984 anticipated? (= 6+5 )
Gerd Rinder
Chess Olympiad Saloniki 1984, 1st prize
Mate in 15
Compare to:
(= 10+9 )
Hans Verschl
Deutsche Schachblätter 12/1983
Mate in 14 (incorrect)
(= 11+11 )
Hans Verschl
Deutsche Schachblätter 12/1983, correction (Deutsche Schachblätter 05/1984)
Mate in 14
Surely, Verschl needs more material, but the matrix is the same. In my opinion a clear anticipation, if - what I don't know - the Olympiad deadline was after the publication of DSZ 12/1983. As we know, a composer has - for two years - the right to correct an incorrect position and still claim the authorship, so the date of DSB 12/1983 should still apply.
Hans Verschl was one of the bigger talents in Germany. He died in a motorcycle accident, his brother told me last year when I called him to find out why Verschl isn't composing anymore. |

Siegfried, this is a name I never heard of, and I've spent much time going through old magazines.
Could you provide more examples of his compositions? |

I uploaded the database with all problems I was able to find so far to http://sh-kunstschach.eu/download/verschl.pgn - it's only six entries of which two (or three, if you don't accept minor duals) are incorrect.
However, the remark that he is a young talent is also from one of the magazines, not from me. |

Is it the same person as "H. Verstl"?
3 problems in PDB: http://www.softdecc.de/pdb/search.pdb?expression=A=%27Verstl%27 |

I doubt so.
Verschl lived in Achern and was 17 at the time when his problem in 06/1983 was published.
Quote from Deutsche Schachblätter 10/1983:
QUOTE Hans Verschl ist zweifellos sehr begabt und hat schon gute Einfälle. Bei seiner 2830 wurde der 17jährige Zauberlehrling allerdings die Geister, die er rief, nicht mehr los.
(see the #7 in the PGN file)
I only have the years 1983 to 1986 available here of the Deutsche Schachblätter.
By the way, anyone knows what became of Christian Remling? He also seems to have been a talent. |

He seems to be wasting his talent doing mathematics and winning important prizes there:

It could be the same person.... |

Same person.
EDIT, June 21: There was some confusion on Saturday since my source has told Remling is a mathematician in _Alabama_ who called him just a few days ago. However, I think it's the same person due to statistical probability. |

He also has an Erdős number of 3. |

Just for fun, if one consider joint problems, Marjan KOVACEVIC and Viktor SYZONENKO both have a "SHINKMAN number" of 4. |

But what is their Morphy number? :) |
