WCSC - INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

Please, notice that the individual results by MiVel are not final. They contain senior solvers, who took part outside the competition. The official results are on the PCCC web site at //http:www.sci.fi/~stniekat/pccc/wcsc08.htm.

... added few more (unofficial) things at "Jurmala Files".

BTW, our precious Maria has already put some photos on the net: http://picasaweb.google.lv/true.ishma/WCCC2008

Just to make things clear. Milan's complete table of the individual WCSC includes four solvers competed unofficially - three seniors marked by (s) and Rumyantsev as Milan already mentioned. Their results can not be taken for the rating calculations and for possible gaining of norms. There is no guideline needed since it is all clear from the official WCSC Rules.
Therefore Milan's calculated changes of ratings are not correct but the differences are small (except at four mentioned solvers for which ratings should not be calculated at all).
The final official table is published on the PCCC site.

I use this opportunity to congratulate and thank Milan for all work concerning WCSC and other solving events in Jurmala.

Marko Klasinc,
spokesman of the PCCC Solving sbcm.

It sounds a bit strange

1) The rating as far as I know has nothing official
2) Even if official - like for titles - the solvers did compete regularly in an official competition so why is there a need to cancel their results ?? If the rules are like that, so change the rules !

The rules are very reasonable and clear, Jacques. With all due respect, there is no need that we open the can of worms every time.

Hello Harry !
I don't know about the rule, but your opinion, indeed, is very reasonable and clear!
But anyway, sometimes, the "can of worms" is found open, or someone not reasonable opens it for any reason, so, then, perhaps...

If I understand well, this rule is mainly to the benefit of the organizers, in order to avoid a massive affluence of solvers, am I right ?

The WCSC rules dictate clearly the number of solvers that each country is allowed to have in the competition. Quite frequently, there are solvers who wish to participate for their own enjoyment, on top of the maximum number of solvers allowed per country. In absolute terms, they are therefore participating unofficially in this competition and their result cannot be considered for their own rating and norms and it cannot affect the performance rating of the eligible solvers.

There was a proposal last year in Rhodes to change the teams to four solvers and take the 2 best of 4 for the team result, but it was not supported by the solving subcommittee and PCCC for several reasons. The main reason was that it would cause bigger differences between stronger and weaker teams on the one hand, but on the other hand differences between the best teams would be smaller and more tied results would be a consequence of this change.

The proposal to extend the teams is not at all bound to my surprise.

1) OK Organizers can accept or refuse any individual - not competing - solver
2) OK Such a solver will not get a ranking - even individual (which even is questionable, because the individual ranking in such a team competition has nothing official)
3) But if in case this solver fulfilled a norm for a title, why shouldn't he get it ?
4) Also, why his results shouldn't be taken in his relo ranking - which is also unofficial ?

The only reason I could understand would be a will to decrease completely the interest of the competition for individual solvers. I think there is no need to that, mainly because the organisers may refuse any individual, for instance if there is a lack of place, or any reason else.

Of course WCSC is a team competition, and this have not to be disturbed. But all other details (like norms, individual ranking, relo, ranking per section and so on) are only side effects, and anyone accepted to compete may be bound to them.

Now it's OK, if this question would provoke (very)long debates, better is not to change anything.

Dear Milan or somebody else, please, explain shortly is it right, that Rumyantsev has rating 2337.47 in the table of Open? He has 2593,31 in the list of non-active solvers. Zalitis (and may be other solvers) is also in this list with another rating. It seems to me, that FIDE counts frozen rating as normal without any changes. May be PCCC have another rules for non-active chessmen?
And another question. Milan's table "Changed Rating After Open" has 7 solvers, that got 0 (zero) points, but here - http://www.saunalahti.fi/~stniekat/pccc/open2008.htm these solvers are not in the table. What about them? If they took part in any round their results must be calculated.

The unofficial rating calculation as well as the WCSC tables have been removed from "Jurmala Files" (http://www.milanvel.net/pub/jurmala/index.php) to avoid the confusion. The official tables can be found at:

Not logical! Since there is no copyright the logical conclusion is that the pictures can be used freely.
Thank you Bora (Borislav) for beautiful photos!

Since every individual picture states "All rights reserved", it should be assumed that's how it is. :-)

For Roberto Stelling, he confirmed to me the cc-by-sa license, which seems that the license is wrongly set at the pictures (maybe automatically by Google?).

You got it right, Siegfried. PicasaWeb automatically assumed my default copyright configuration for all the pictures.
It must be ok now. Please feel free to use the pictures under cc-by-sa.

I've also published some pictures from Rhodes under the same license.

Cheers,
Roberto

Roberto, thank a lot.

Regarding the discussion that went along with the permission I asked Roberto: regardless of any automatic permission of use and/or other rules, I would not use any of the photos without the specific and direct permission of the author.

Paz
