One of already traditional events in Marianka is fairy solving competition. There is a chance also for those not being present in Marianka to participate actively in this event. How is that possible? It is simple. As a competition organizer and director I try to use as many originals for this competition as possible. Every year I choose limited set of fairy elements that should be acceptable for such event. Then I compose originals using the set of fairy elements and invite other composers to contribute suitable problems. Just imagine - the participants not only play through the solutions, but they even solve your fairy problems! This is an exceptional chance for every fairy chess composer as fairy solving competitions are rare.

For Marianka 2015 I have chosen to return back to basics. My pre-selected fairy elements for this year are: grasshopper, nightrider and Circe. I might add one more fairy element to this set, but it depends on the available problems and circumstances.

And here is your chance. I will be glad to receive originals for fairy solving competition from anyone not going to participate in the competition as solver. #2, #3, acceptable moremover, h#, s# and seriesmovers, possibly something slightly more exotic. Just use grasshopper, nightrider or Circe. If you think your original could be suitable for competition, send it to me (juraj.lorinc@gmail.com)! Then if selected, it will be published also in the next Marianka bulletin in the report about the fairy solving. (So do not send anything you would like to have awarded in a tourney.) In any case, I will write you back.

Is a combination of two or all three fairy elements acceptable?

Yes, combination is allowed and welcome.

You can find reports of fairy solving competitions including all diagrams in bulletins of years 2012, 2013 and 2014 at page http://festival.soks.sk/en/category/bulletins/

Last year there was #2 with lions and Andernach chess, some solvers were able to solve it. On the other hand, e.g. longer helpmates with fairy pieces are usually too difficult (or solvers just give priority to shorter problems in the open format).

Usually, when we (in Slovakia) speak about twomovers without any qualification, it is about #2. It might not be a practice everywhere, especially now, when h#s are far more popular with composers than directmates, but we have not changed or habit yet.

As the Marianka Cup is announced for any fairy twomovers in at least three phases, it offers fairly wide scope for authors. And needless to say, the judge, Juraj Brabec, is among world leadin experts in the area of multiphase fairy twomovers. So I bet any good entry will not be overlooked.

Marianka fairy tourney open also for e-mailing authors was just announced.

- In English on CCM: http://jurajlorinc.com/chess/ma15faan.htm
- In Slovak on official Marianka festival page: http://festival.soks.sk/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2015/08/Marianka-TT-exo-2015-announce.pdf

Fairly different sets of examples used in both announcements, so make sure to have a look at both if you need inspiration.

I have not understood Ladislav's point. How does plagiarism fit in the title of the lecture?

By the way, who is the author of the first composition he had shown? He mentions Vladimirov's name, but the problem is neither included in his recent book (highly recommended!) nor in WinChloe and YACPDB that I searched. Davidenko's #3 was awarded by Vladimirov a 4th prize in Uralsky Problemist 2002, and the judge does not mention in his award the first problem at all.

My understanding as direct participant was as follows:

- Laco first has shown the first problem, composed by him
- the problem was sent to the World Cup competition where it was included in the preliminary award among prizes (3rd Prize)
- then however the problem was disqualified and excluded from the final award by the judge, citing the second, Davidenko's problem as predecessor
- Laco is upset very much by this decision and during the lecture he has demonstrated both important differences between his and Davidenko's position, as well as defects of Davidenko
- one of points is that he really feels as being accused of plagiarism by this decision, although it was not said anywhere
- this was also explained during the lecture - the process of creation was so intensive that Laco has searched database for possible predecessors only afterwards and indeed he has seen Davidenko's problem, but dismissed it within 15 seconds as very much different
- that is why the title: he knew the Davidenko's problem, but has sent his own to competition nevertheless.

My opinion, shared with majority of lecture audience, is that this exclusion was undeserved.

The problem was later published in column in Pravda: http://www.rubriky.net/pravda/r2015/pr_4052.php

Thanks, Juraj, it's clear now.

I agree with the audience that Davidenko's problem does not anticipate Ladislav's composition.

Funny you mention Geri, I saw the movie yesterday.
He must be a problem composer, who else would
try to cheat against himself :-)
