Some 18 years ago, I had suggested to the then PCCC president - Klaus Wenda, that a new class of PCCC members be created. These members would not have voting rights and they need not attend meetings. However, they would get all information about PCCC activities.

This proposal was actually put up and discussed but was felt unnecessary - it was concluded that anybody could get the required information by writing to the PCCC office bearers.

Those days the internet was not available or was in its infancy.

Today, of course, there is definitely no need for such special membership - due to all information being available on websites and/or by email.

Still, today, with low cost video conferencing technologies being available, I wonder if PCCC meetings could be opened to people who can't afford to attend them - like in India or Australia?

I am not a delegate but I do support this idea. It would be nice to include as many countries as possible to participate in our organization. With today’s technology it’s very easy to organize video meetings. And it’s free. It just requires all participants to have computers. This would save a lot of money from our small yearly budget. If we look financial expense report submitted we can see that this way we can save 500 euros for phone calls, 500 euros for office expenses and much more for travel expenses. The money saved by video conferencing can be allocated to support online problem forums/magazines. That way I think we would attract much more problemists from different countries.

I work for Microsoft. Even if my company does not have problems with a money it still uses video conferencing to cut expenses. I do work on the same project with people from all over the World (Seattle, Beijing, Tel Aviv etc.). We all get together through video conferencing and it works perfectly fine.

With respect to Karpov's candidature for Fide presidency - just in case somebody didn't hear about it, s. http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=6354
This incident reminds me of Jonathan Speelman's anagrammatic rendering of 'Gens una sumus':
Us use guns, man!
