with less than 4 mates the P4 can be done in 7 pieces (and the Q1 in 7)

(= 4+3 )

Jacques, you are a tricky guy! Took me ten minutes to
find the Q1 position :-)
@James:

(= 11+7 )

EDIT: On suggestion of Jacques, the Bh1 has been
moved to f3. This justifies the obvious key piece
by adding the vv 1.Sf4? Rg4!, 1.Sge5? Rg7! and
finds my full agreement.
We don't agree about whether 1.Sc~,1.Sxb8,1.Sce5?
with correction play count as v, though :-)

Another find:
http://www.schach-udo.de/albrecht/albrecht2/?rec=115816
Mari 1917. BP3 as promotions (2 mates only). 3 seem
remotely possible in a scheme like Qd2 Sf1/Pe2 Kf2, Qc3!

(= 8+4 )
2#
1.Qxc3!
That can be seen as a BP3 or a BP8 because you have 3 mates but 8 pawn moves with no dual mate

(Thus the Kh1, to avoid a dxe1R dual, otherwise two pieces
can be saved, but Jacques knows that already :-)
Still, The Great Haukini has this:

(= 7+4 )

Only the stalemate release is the progress against:

One last thing: what's the bishop record?

Post 27 in this overlong thread :-)

And who says "last":
(= 9+7 )

1.Rxd3 ZZ f1S/f1Q/fg1S/fg1Q 2.Re2/Qg4/Se1/Qf3#

Too bad it's cooked by Sdxf2. Maybe someone has
the decisive construction trick?

EDIT:

(= 12+10 )

1.Rxd3! th,exf1S/exf1Q/e1S/e1Q 2.Rg2/Qe3/Rd2/Qf4#

Yeah.

Hauke, your "correction" does not work : only 3 mates

(= 9+10 )

1.R×d3! block

1…e1=S 2.Rd2‡

And Jacques wins with less material and promoted units!

And thanks Hauke. However, you can remove the promotion, dual, as follows.

#2
(= 13+4 )

1. Ne2!

I find Jacques decookment brilliant, but of course
I win with the following position :-)

(= 9+6 )

1.Qxa3! (2.Qxb2) with 5 variants, 4 different mates and no
underpromotion duals. (And of course no promoted material.)
As this took me about 15 minutes, I'm astonished Albrecht
gave no hits.

@James: Point taken, how about:

(= 9+3 )

EDIT: And with some creativity and a totally different mate:

(= 8+3 )

@Jacques: A is very clever! E (as well as the matrix with
the inverse battery B-R) has been anticipated to hell and
back, though. :-)
(I really should write a little article on it...AFTER my
thesis, that is :-)
