Is Matt Bengtson‘s joke problem cooked?

While it is a good problem, I think that it is cooked.

Matt Bengtson, Chess Braintwisters (Burt Hochberg), no. 103
WTM, =

(= 4+9 )

(Taken from: https://chess.stackexchange.com/questions/13322/is-there-any-position-where-not-promotingillegally-would-be-the-best-move/25350#25350)

The solution, as it is a joke, is 1. g8=Black Queen! Qg7+ 2. fxg7 c2 3. g8=Q c1=Q 4. Qxf7+ Kd8 5. Qe8+ Kc7 6. Qc8+ Kb6 (Kd6 7. Qc5+) 7. Qc6+ Ka7/Ka5 8. Qb7/Qb5.

But couldn’t Black just play 3... f6!, thereby ruining any stalemating chances by Black and thus cooking the problem? Is there any way to correct it?

I have a reason as to why that can’t be done. It’s a bit lengthy though.

**********
A Logical Classifcation System Of Joke Promotion Problems

There seems to be no order for joke promotion problems, so I did my best to create a reasonable one. This is a “Codex” for them if you will.

All said problems fall into one of 6 levels of what type of joke promotion/s is are allowed,

Logically, all given statements apply to both sides.

Levels:

1) Dummy pawn promotions

2) King promotions

3) Promotions to enemy queen, knight, rook, and bishop.

4) Promotions to enemy king, queen, knight, rook, and bishop.

5) Promotions to enemy pawn, queen, knight, rook, and bishop.

6) Promotion into an enemy pawn, king, queen, knight, rook, and bishop.

Condtions:

Optional Condition W(ait): A pawn may move as a pawn onto the 8th rank as a pawn, and promote on a later move.

Reason: See the third problem from this ChessBase article: https://en.chessbase.com/post/nihal-sarin-in-hamburg-fun-with-chess

Optional Condition C(astling): If a side promotes to a king and rook on squares opposite their home squares, castling may be done on the opponent’s first rank, given that castling rules apply. The new pieces have never moved. Since the rule that castling only takes place on the first rank is broken, Krabbe-Pam castling is an allowed side effect. It can be done normally. Depending on the chosen level though, it can be done the opposite way as well.

Reason: See P1359646

Optional Condtion C2: Only the Tim-Krabbe castling rules from Cond. C apply.

Reason: See http://www.matplus.net/start.php?px=1571947002&app=forum&act=posts&fid=xshowh&tid=2378&pid=18134#n18134

Condiition R(ex Multiplex): A problem must state how to deal with checkmating/stalemating mutiple kings. Fairy condtions are welcome.

Basic Movement Rules:

A pawn on an 8th rank is frozen forever, unless Condition W is in effect.

All pieces move normally, unless fairy condtions are in effect.

A pawn on a player’s first rank, resulting from an enemy promotion, is allowed to have a double step on it’s first move since the FIDE rules state that ”3.7.2 On its first move the pawn may move as in 3.7.1 or alternatively it may advance two squares along the same file, provided that both squares are unoccupied,” The pawn has never moved. En passant still applies, but just one rank down.

If a player promotes to an enemy rook or king on it’s home sqaure, the enemy may castle provided that all castling rules are followed. This is allowed as the new pieces have never moved.

Level Rules:

1.1. Levels 1 and 2 are for the promotions to piece the color of the promoting side, and Levels 3-6 are for said side promoting into the opposite color.

1.2. Only one of the levels 3-6 may be applied and Levels 1 and/or 2 may be applied alongside

1.3? levels 3-6 are not applied, level 1 and/or level 2 must apply.

1.4. The chosen level must make sure that the problem is correct,

1.5.If two levels are equivalent for a problem, the level that contains the least wording takes precedence.

1.6.If unlabled, a problem must be labled a level in fashion that does not cook it and with accordance with 1.5.

Conditon Rules:

1.1 A condtition is only allowed if stated as being allowed.

1.2 1.1 does not apply to Condition R,

*******
While I just made up this classfication system (and a few kinks may be within), it is meant to be a logical system for classifying joke promotion problems.

The Bengtson problem, since promotion to a BK is not is seen, could either level 3 or 5, but since level 3 “gives the least,” it is the best fit. Since it is level 3, promotion to a BK is therefore not allowed,

Does this make any sense to you?
