Sir Jeremy Morse

Sad news. Sir Jeremy Morse passed away peacefully this morning at Trinity Hospice, London. He had been ill for some time.

For an appreciation of Jeremy's contribution to British chess problems see an article by John Rice from the BCPS website.

A huge loss for the British Chess Problem Society and Chess composition as a whole. The amazing “Chess Problems: Tasks and Records” has been inspiring hundreds of outstanding achievements, and will keep doing so in many years to come. My sincere condolences to his family and all BCPS members.

Thanks for your kind words, Marjan. I have been working with Jeremy for the last couple of years and am very happy to say that a much enlarged and updated third edition of his Tasks and Records book is now with the printer, to be published by Matador. It is a great regret that Jeremy never got to see the printed book, but he did sign off the final content before Christmas and the cover just a couple of weeks ago. This edition has much improved layout. I believe it will be a fitting summation of his long-time researches into the subject. It will now be for others to take up the task of curating these records. Whoever they are, they will start work from a very firm foundation.

Working with Jeremy was delightful. He was an old-fashioned gentleman and had a mind like a steel trap. He was meticulous in everything he did and was always ready to take advice on those matters he had no experience of and also on matters where he had great experience. His attention to detail was amazing, and would have shamed many people a fraction of his age. He was also a very understanding taskmaster of my work in helping him produce the book - testing problems and typesetting. Without my other duties, the book would have been finished some months ago and he would have lived to see it. He never complained.

It is less known that sir Jeremy was generously supporting the Mat Plus project, especially during the last years of Milan's work. He insisted the help not to be publicly acknowledged, but the fact deserves to be added to the long list of his merits.

Sir Jeremy's book has now been printed and is available from this website:

The price is very low because Jeremy wanted it to be.

Sad news, especially to British chess problemists. Recently so many of their seniors have left, Mathews, Valois, Chris Reeves, Tony Lewis and now Jeremy Morse. Some years ago Macleod. I liked very much his nicely compiled book Tasks and Records - invaluable for two mover composers.
