Let me quote myself: "... five changed mates after the battery construction intros to try and actual play. Attractive theme, the record number of variations, a perfect construction and harmonious and rich play place this masterpiece to the very top of my all time greatest list... but disappointedly does not guarantee a high tourney reward." (MV: "Change As Change Can", Mat Plus 2-4/1994)

Great problem, pathetic judgment.

The judges were Adelmo Alpi, Mario Camorani, Giorgio Mirri and Antonio Piatesi.

Isn't it about time someone produced a collection of Touw Hian Bwee's problems? He's a superb composer.

Several years ago I exchanged few e-mail messages with Mr. Touw Hian Bwee, and he sent me a Word document with collection of his problems prepared for printing (cover page: "Collection of Chess Problems by Touw Hian Bwee" - Privately printed and published, Jakarta, March 2000, © Touw Hian Bwee).

I am not sure if the book has really been printed. I doubt it, because otherwise there would have been a numerous reviews all over the World.

I have just sent an email message to his (hopefully still valid) address, asking him for information. (fyi, in case that he never printed the book, I asked him for permission to do it.)

Since Michael mentioned the judges, here is what they said in the award:

"Il vetusto tema della batterie bianche controllate da due pezzi neri, é presentato due volte, con una batteria che entre in funzione nel Gioco Virtuale e l’altra nella soluzione. La presentazione é eccelente, ma lo schema é piuttosto sfruttato". (Jury: A. Alpi, M. Camorani, G. Mirri & A. Piatesi)

So the judges think that the scheme has been used before. I understand they don't provide a proof. Does anybody know of a similar scheme pre dating this problem?

The battery choice try+key was very popular in 1970-es. The most interesting forms were arrival of one front piece to two different battery lines, and arrivals of two front pieces to the same battery line (the black pawn capture was inherent feature!). A rear piece arrivals were less frequent. The most involved authors were Duch composers Goldschmeding, Haring and Visserman, several Soviet masters, and of course a magnificent Indonesian Touw Hian Bwee. I remember that there were several examples with four changes with two-line form (one even by myself!), but I am quite sure that the problem we are talking about was and probably remained the only with five changed mates.

I am delighted to inform you all that Touw Hian Bwee accepted the proposition that I take care of printing the collection his compositions. I will do my best to complete the job as soon as possible.

You may also have noticed that Mr. Touw Hian Bwee has joined to our MatPlus.Net community and it is my pleasure, as one of his greatest fans, to express my warm welcome to him.
