In a black correction problem, the thematic piece is lifted off the board into the third dimension(and if it is an officer, guards the square it vacated). A mate(contingent threat)or continuation is provided. Must the black piece actually need at least one representative square to go to and allow the contingent threat to work?

J.M.Rice made a problem showing eight corrections after a black knight move. The mate after the random move never happened !

Exactly what I thought immediately. @Eugene: "must" implies "or else!" -
so what happens if not? The Spanish Inquisition, expected by noone? :-)
I.e. I don't think any judge will downrank the mentioned problem
just because there is no S~.

so to what extent would one alter one's construction to include a representative random square to work in the variation? As an example would it be worth adding extra force to get a proper contingent threat to work based on this random sqare?
