### A Little Fun

Here’s an extenion of an old idea. I came up with it awhile ago. Enjoy!

BTM h#2 Without Queening A Pawn

(= 4+4 )

Here is the solution: 1. e2. e8=WK! 2. e1=WR! 0-0-0-0-0-0#! (WKe8->e6, WRe1->e7)

P1359646 introduced me to the idea of castling with a newly minted king and rook. The extra conditions, as far as I can tell, are that the new pieces must be opposite the starting sqaures of the rook and king, The new pieces have technically not moved.

I then thought, why not apply Pam-Krabbe castling? With the king promotion, it can be done on the other side of board. Black’s promotion into a White rook was the only way to do it of course. It also further serves to extend the overall joke.

Many thanks for the inspiration Andrew Buchanan!

What's wrong with 1.Kxb7 e8R 2.Ka8 Rxb8?

And why not 1.Kxb7 e8R 2.Ka8 Rxb8#? - Perhaps because the illegal mate without wK?

Should be an easy fix.

BTM, h#2

(= 5+4 )

Are You sure?! But Chess is a royalist-patriarchal game and White can't play with a vacant throne. (as already pointed out by NP).

Yes, I’m sure Zalmen. The entire problem isn’t meant to be orthodox. It’s a neat joke.

Hmm, but then Black can also promote to wB and White mates with Bg3#.

Like this, maybe?

(= 3+3 )

Not yet.
1.e2 e8K 2.e1wQ Qe7#

Yes, but there is still the restriction «without queening a pawn.» Otherwise, I don’t think you can prevent 1...e8Q 2...Qe7#.

Geir has found a correct diagram.

And Siegfried, there is the restriction of no pawn queening.

twin (b) Pe3 to e2: 1.e1=wR e8=N+ 2.Kd7 Re7# (not 1...e8=K 2.?? Zz)

Excellent idea, but there is also 1.e1wR e8bN 2.Nd6 Re7#.

Better than excellent. It should be a way to fix the dual, because Your mate is ideal.

(= 4+3 )

(b) pe3 to e2

*!?

# (or b before a :: because Knight f8 have no function in a)

(= 4+3 )

(b) pe2 to e3

#

Great settings you found!
(EDIT: I meant in general, not only directed at Zalmen Kornin)

Wow, I'm unable see what's so great about wSf8.

Do You prefer two promotions to Knights of opposite colors in e8!? Well, for me it's ok... The mating frames are different

(= 3+3 )

Black moves (Kd7 and e1=wR) can be interchanged.
