Here is something I saved for further reference:

C. Goldschmeding, 117.TT Schwalbe, 1. Price
(= 10+8 )

1.e4 ~/d3/de ep 2.Bb4:/Qe5/Bb4:

I'm *still* impressed.

This is the definition of black correction that I developed in an article in the latest issue of idee & form:

1. A defense is a primary defense (also defense of 1st degree) if
- it has one or more useful effects, that allow the continuation F2
- it has one or more harmful effects that refute F1 (threat/Zugzwang)

2. A defense is a correction (also secondary defense or defense of 2nd degree) if
- it has one or more useful effects that would in principle allow F2
- it has one or more harmful effects that refute F1 and F2
- there exists a primary defense against F1 that allows F2

3. A defense is a defense of nth degree if
- it has one or more useful effects that would in principle allow F2 ... Fn
- it has one or more harmful effects that refute F1 ... Fn
- there exists a defense of (n-1)th degree against F1 ... Fn-1 that allows Fn

"useful" and "harmful" are to be read from the point of view of the attacker (typically White)
"effects" is to be read as "one or more effects"

(C. G. S. Naraynan asked me to post his opinion on this matter -- Administrator)

"The discussion on ‘strong similarity’and ‘partial anticipation’ comparing my problem with Mladenovic’s prompted me to post my views on the subject.

Quaternary correction by black knight on bent lines are plenty( I have composed a few both in black and white correction) where no two problems are termed similar. The corrections by linear pieces with anti Bristol effects are not entirely new. I have seen two BCF winners by P.F.Copping in the late sixties when I started composing. If the linear pieces have to correct on the line, the mechanism HAS to be the familiar anti-Bristol paradox. The originality in these cases is to be judged (in these themes with visual effects) is not by comparing the correction pieces involved but by the correction mechanisms presented (the motifs, the resultant errors and the mates) I see no similarity absolutely in the problems of Copping, Mladenovic and mine except that they use the same two line pieces for correction play. All are highly original in conception of correction mechanism in totally different settings. I agree with Mladenovic on this issue.

C.G.S.Narayanan"
