It's a colourful life!

For those who are bored (like me!) with the black and white diagrams seen in most places, here's something different...

Arthur Kalverboer (http://home.deds.nl/~svg_experimenten/draughtboard/index.html) has these:

1. Chess Diagram Maker (http://home.deds.nl/~svg_experimenten/chessboard/chess_diagram_maker.html) which helps in preparing diagrams for orthodox chess problems

2. Chess Board Image (http://home.deds.nl/~svg_experimenten/chessboard/chess_board_image.html) - same as above but you get finer control over the colours and other features

And.. after my request, He has now created:

3. Fairy Chess Diagram Maker (http://home.deds.nl/~svg_experimenten/fairychess/fairy_chess_diagram_maker.html) - where you get the normal pieces in all rotations, plus a few other symbols, plus board sizes(square only) up to 20x20!

In all of the above, there are almost 30 different piece styles to choose from. And of course, you can tweak the board colours to your heart's content, as also diagram border size and diagram image size. There's more! You can also type in text to appear above and below the diagram. The final output can be saved as a .png image - for using in a web page or book or pdf. The first two use FEN, while the last uses FFEN notation.

Great Stuff!

I should also mention Peter Wong's http://www.virtualpieces.net/

Many of the best piece figurines used by Arthur have been created by Peter.

In addition, on his site, there are also:

º More than 100 chess icons for Windows and Mac.
º Kits for creating high-quality chess diagrams.
º High-definition chess wallpapers and graphics.
º All downloads are freeware for personal use.

Here too, Peter recently extended his Diagramkit packages to include rotated pieces for Fairy Chess.

Peter is also the maintainer of http://www.ozproblems.com/ - with highly interesting material on chess problems and composers down under.

Both Peter and Arthur have done a wonderful job. Give their creations a try! They're free!

Same with "terrible" and "terrific" - now go and confuse
the two on a funeral...English sooooo sucks :-)
(For non-native speakers, of course.)

Arthur Kalverboer has further enhanced his "Fairy Chess Diagram Maker"!
http://home.deds.nl/~svg_experimenten/fairychess/fairy_chess_diagram_maker.html

New are:
- Easier way to handle rotated pieces. Instead of showing all the rotated pieces, there are now 4 radio buttons to indicate the degree of rotation: 0, 90, 180 and 270.
- Neutral Pieces! All the piece themes now have two-toned versions for use as neutral pieces!

I made a fairy diagram maker in 2002, enhanced by Otto Janko a few years later: http://www.janko.at/Retros/d.htm

Arthur has based his diagram maker's extension to fairy chess on Joost's FFEN.. which is acknowledged in the help page. There is also a link to the janko.at website page.

There seems to be a restriction that boards need to be square.. i.e no 7x8, 8x9, etc. Any way around this?

Further improvements(8-Sep-15):

1. Non-Square Boards are now possible! from 1x1 to 20x20. The number of squares indicated in the first part of the FFEN will be taken as the number of columns and the number of slashes plus 1 will be taken as the number of rows. For example, 1N3/4/3 will be translated as a 5x3 board with a WS on b3. Any mismatching rows will be matched to the 1st mentioned row, with extra columns added or subtracted as required.
Also, For sizes greater than 9, the columns in the FFEN has to be shown as a sequence of 9s plus a number from 1 to 9. For example, a 20x3 board is written as 992/992/992, or even simply as 992//, since, as explained above, the remaining rows are matched to the 1st mentioned row. A 15x4 board translates as: 96///

2. The "non-piece" figures: circle, square, triangle, cross now also have neutral variants.

Great work by Arthur!

More improvements by Arthur! (9-Sep-15)

1. The FFEN logic has been made more natural - just enter the actual number of empty squares in each row!
2. The "non-piece" images are now neatly lined up in the same rows as their regular piece brothers.
3. Rotation now also possible for the "non-piece" images (though this affects only the triangle image! Edit-14-09: and also the neutral versions!). Maybe Arthur could be persuaded to add a few more images. ;-)
4. The "Good Companion" piece image set by David Brown is added to the piece themes.

A clear and easy way to generate orthodox and fairy chess diagrams on the fly online!
