popeye is packaged for Ubuntu

[repost from Julia's fairies]

Hello,

This is for those interested in running popeye on Ubuntu desktop, but not interested in compiling it every time.

I have made a PPA for popeye 4.47, binaries for trusty (14.04, LTS edition). Here it goes:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:punund/popeye-chess
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install popeye-chess

If you indicate your interest, I will make packages for precise, utopic, vivid, and wily (15.10, once it's out).

Would be nice to have it also for Android, with a good user interface.

Not before someone ports it to Android.

Given that there is no glibc, and development in C is not encouraged for this platform, I wouldn't bet on it. I would bet on iOS though.

Diyan Kostadinov was distributing an app for Android, which was using Ankona's solving server, not sure if it's still there.

There is also the Amazon Kindle Linux backend - for the e-ink versions only.
But here, the memory constraints may be too difficult to overcome..

Regarding Diyan Kostadinov's Android App, It's still very much there! And a new version is forthcoming. Diyan seems to be a bit busy, though.
And yes, it still uses Popeye through a web link to Ankona. Maybe for the future, users will get an option to connect to their own servers, running Popeye.

The new version of ChessComposer - an app for Android OS smartphones and tablets is ready and much improved. Now the view on tablets is better with different size pieces. Also many new options included since last version.

And the most importat - it will be freeware, so all can download and use it for free. Still make some final checking and will be available soon on my website.
