34th TT CCM C 4.4.2014

CCM has just announced a new edition of the traditional theme tourney.

Theme shortly: fairy selfmates with antibattery mates (at least two)

Deadline 4.4.2014, judge Sven Trommler.

More on the announcement page: http://www.jurajlorinc.com/chess/ann34tt.htm

Nice to see that these Fairy tourneys are now "traditional" ! :)

The definition of antibattery from FIDE Album was included in the announcement to avoid misunderstanding.

Does the FIDE Album definition recognize indirect or masked antibattery?
The following example s#1 has no solution by Popeye 4.63. What do I miss in T&M rules and would such mate be thematic if Popeye is wrong?

White royal RHa8
White Pb6 Pf6 Ph6
Black Kh8 Pb7 Pg7 Gd5
Stipulation S#1
Condition Take&MakeChess
wRoyal Rookhopper a8, bGrasshopper d5
1.fxg7-g6 Kg8#

bKg8 is a hurdle for the Make-part of the check by bG which is a piece requiring a hurdle :)

In T&M, checks and mates are normal, so the white royal rookhopper is already mated, and White has no move.

Thanks Geoff, I had read the definition of T&M at Kobulchess. A different meaning of check is not mentioned there, so I have followed the logic of some other fairy conditions with consistent meaning of the captures.

"Antibattery: a piece requiring a hurdle gives check through a move of a piece of the same colour (the hurdle) on to its line"

If a hurdle is provided by capturing an opponents piece, using Circe, is it an Anti-battery? In such a case the hurdle that moves to the checking line is different from the checking piece. I doubt that such a scheme is possible in selfmates, but quite feasible in directmates. So my question is only a general one regarding Anti-batteries.

Seetharaman: "If a hurdle is provided by capturing an opponents piece, using Circe, is it an Anti-battery? Actually this is feasible in selfmate, see e.g. s#2 by K. Gandev - http://jurajlorinc.com/chess/ectoba02.htm#uloha1 - or further examples on the same page. Gandev's selfmate shows both direct and indirect use of the same reborn pawn twice, it is a very instructive and well conceived scheme.

The point is that such activation is not antibattery nor battery. In my view it is a third form of indirect line activation - neither by departure from the line nor by arrival on the line. The line is activated by move starting and ending somewhere else than on the line - but it has and effect on the line. I use to call that ectobattery (term coined by Chris Feather in 2009).

Some theoretical considerations are at the page announcing 28th TT CCM - http://jurajlorinc.com/chess/ann28tt.htm - and further theory with examples on the special page - http://jurajlorinc.com/chess/theo28tt.htm

Nikola: FIDE Album definition says nothing about indirect or masked form of antibattery. While ordinary direct antibattery is not so unusual in selfmates, indirect antibatteries are quite rare (an usually they are present together with direct antibattery, by checkmating move activating both) and I know no example of masked antibattery mate in selfmate.

(Edit: one term was wrong)

Thanks Juraj! The Gandev problem is beautiful with direct and indirect antibatteries in two variations in a very light setting. Remarkable is the ortho-diagonal echoes. Great problem. Swindly's problem in the same link (using WP & Circe) is also nice with an interesting ZZ finish !

An illustration for counting antibatteries. There should be: after B1 - 1 direct which transforms into indirect, after B2 - 1 direct, 5 new indirect and 1 direct masked (functioning as a pin of wPd5). There's also "antipin" of wPd5.

For the sake of easier understanding I think providing the solution is useful:

1.b3! zz KAc5+ 2.Kf5 zz e5#

Thanks Juraj, you are probably right, I also often have no time for solving the illustrating examples and without a solution, of course, the point of a post can't bee seen.
I hoped that the single legal black move would easily reveal the solution and solving a problem by yourself is an excellent basis for understanding the idea. But I would very probably also lose the patience for solving, due to the DoubleGrasshopper's tricky possibilities.

Gandev's problem is beautiful but a hurdle of different color doesn't fit in the strict definition of antibattery. However, a white hurdle for a black piece is a result of black move. I think this is the essence of a black antibattery, Black actively provides a hurdle for his own piece. Problem shows the ectobattery play resulting with the antibattery mate?! :)

Antipin .... Is such a term in use? Anyway in the example after 2...e5 , Pd5 is pinned by KAa5. If a hopper is pinning, should the term Antipin be used? Not sure.

Pin means that a depature of a piece would result with a selfcheck. If a selfcheck would be a result of the arrival of a piece that might be called "antipin", just as the departure/arrival effects determine battery/antibattery.

After 2... e5#, 3.d6?? would result with a check by KAa5 and 3.dxe6 ep.?? would result with a check by DGb7.

Gandev problem shows no antibattery in my own understanding. Just ectobattery, twice. There is no arrival of black mass on the black line, rather the line is activated by move starting and ending outside of the line.

Antipin as used by Nikola is sometimes called repelling too, but antipin is good term in my view, bringing good analogy to battery-antibattery pair.

What is the essence of (anti)battery)? We may stick to the concept of two pieces of the same color, but why? Is there a particular logic for that, or we just use the term with orthodox origin? More essential looks which side played a move that removes an obstruction or provides a hurdle. In this view, we could apply "ecto" for ectobattery and ectoantibattery.
