I've read and reread, many times, Comins Mansfield's classic Adventures in Composition. It is perhaps my favorite chess problem book in that it truly delves into the mind of the composer and more importantly, the composing process.
Extending the knowledge to a multi-phase #2, how does everyone here handle the composing process once a basic matrix takes place?
1.does one deal with the potential cooks/duals from the beginning
2.at what point do you look for the try refutations if theses moves themselves not fall into potential pattern play?
I'd really like to know!

I have done a few modern twomovers. While I was generally on the look out for the obvious checking moves which could be cooks, my concentration was on the defences and the changed mates (without duals)which are the essential at the stage of the scheme itself. Some schemes have inherent duals which should be dealt with first. Once these were settled, I looked for refutations. Last stage was for improved construction, better refutations. Sometimes it may happen that the search for improvements will result in a different scheme with better features.

Tricky. My compositions tend to compose themselves. (Either that, or
they fight back to the bitter end.) Once the basic matrix "stands",
the rest takes 10 minutes. If I'm dissatisfied with the result,
probably already the matrix was "bad".
I'm not the best informant anyway, since I usually keep myself
wide away from "modern" problems.

As more you analyze your mechanism, as better possibilities you find. Usually, the most subtle ways are found at the end.

While I compose orthodox twomovers only very rarely, I have already composed quite a few fairy modern twomovers. I think that my experience can be partly transferred to the orthodox field.
Once I have the matrix, I try to find a way to guard all squares that need to be guarded so that I can see the most difficult points in construction, including potential cooks, duals and refutations. Then, based on the findings, I pursue the most promising (given by experience) way to solve constructional difficulties. If I am successful, good, if not, there are usually many different ways to try. Often refutations of some phases come naturally, but sometimes I have to search for them. The same is true for other points. Sometimes I have to backtrack further to the "past" and change more important points of the construction.
