Theme: Orthodox helpmates in 3 moves (h#3) with active sacriface of the white piece and one or more tempo move(s) in the solution. Tempo can be either black, or white, or black & white.

Active sacrifice means that the white piece moves and arrives to the square where it will be captured.

In my view a tempo move is wrongly noted in the Mikota problem. While 1...Bf8 undoubtedly is an active sacrifice, it is not a tempo move as it opens line for the 3rd black move. 3.Qxf8, therefore it has positive motif and cannot be considered a tempo move. On the other hand, once the position after the 2nd white move is attained, 3.Qxf8 is a pure tempo move.

One could argue that with other available move for White (e.g. with +wpf5 White could play 1...f5 and Black later 3.Qa5 or 3.f1R/S), White needn't leave c5 with bishop, but this just shows negative motivation of 1...Bf8 (opening of a5-d5 and unguard of f2), forcing the unique tempo move in the 3rd black move.

 QUOTE
Juraj Lörinc: In my view a tempo move is wrongly noted in the Mikota problem...

The confusion is caused by my (=MV) error: the real tempo is 3.Qf8 (the announcement has been corrected and this move is now underlined). In the article which will be printed in the next MPR Borislav Gadjanski classified this problem in section "White sacrifice and black tempo move".

Regarding 1...Bf8, this move is taken by white in lack of a tempo, so it's at least an intended tempo, but with a side effect. Juraj is right, this is not not a real tempo, but nevertheless this is undoubtedely the most important and beautiful move in the whole conception. I removed the underline below Bf8, but could not resist to 'underdot' it :)
