Hi everyone, let me invite everyone to Marianka 2018. This week we held a traditional preparatory meeting of organizers and everything seems to be ready as usual.

If you can't imagine how is it like in Marianka, the meeting is taking place in the tranquil place of former monastery, with only bells and birds making noises outside. Rich lectures programme (you can have your own on your beloved topic), meeting with many leading Slovak composers like Gvozdjak, Brabec, Sovik, Packa, Labai, Klemanic, Dyachuk, of course foreign guests (this year we already have confirmed Georgy Evseev from Russia, who will have lecture Correction in complete cycles). Two solving competitions (orthodox and fairy), 5 composing tourneys to cater for everyone's taste.

However what I like the most about Marianka, it is its atmosphere. The accomodation and meals are simple, but the feelings are very pleasant and only rarely you feel like being in a hurry, it differs from WCCC in this respect. There is enough time to meet anyone 1-to-1 and discuss anything, to compose something, to enjoy forest-like surroundings.

This year it is the jubilee 10th International Marianka - you would be very welcome!

@ Juraj

Will the composing tourneys be worldwide-opened?
If so, when they will be announced?

Marianka Cup will be announced 1 month before Marianka and will be closed on the day Marianka starts. Marianka Cup is usually open worldwide (but chance is it will not allow helpmates).
The other four tourneys will be announced on the day Marianka starts and deadline will be Saturday evening 20:00. Whether they would be open worldwide, it is a judge's discretion, usually at least one of them is open, including helpmate tourney.

And Marianka Cup 2018 is here:

http://festival.soks.sk/en/tourneys-2018/

The tourney is dedicated to orthodox and fairy twomovers in at least two phases showing secondary threat paradox. Deadline is set to 22.8.2018, Juraj Brabec will be the judge. Details on the above mentioned page.

Concerning the theme.

IF I correctly understand the definition the theme should be described by something like the following matrix.

1.X; 1...random 2.A#; 1...exact 2.B#
1.Y; 1...random 2.C#; 1...exact 2.A#

Am I right?
If yes, then is it required that "random" and "exact" in different phases are the same move?

I think you are right. A/B B/A pattern also would be thrmatic

I have consulted Georgy's question with the judge and here is the essence of our conversation.

Although in Slovakia the definition of secondary threat paradox is well known, it makes sense to give it as precisely as possible, so that authors abroad are not confused.

Secondary threat paradox described situation when correcting defence defending against secondary threat (mate after random move) allows the same mate in the other phase.

Let's take the following moves:
Checkmate M
Random move of piece X: X~ (denoted a)
Correction of piece X! (denoted b)

In the first phase: 1...X~ a 2.M#, 1...X! or 1...X! b 2.B#
In the second phase: 1...X~ a not important, 1...X! b 2.M#

It means that the theme is fulfilled if the problem contains moves a, b, A in listed functions. Anything else is possible and allowed.

This also means that at least one phase must show the theme of black correction and move b can appear either as refutation (in correction phase) or as a defence with mate change. Moreover moves a, b must be done by the same black piece.

I still have not received an unambiguous answer to my second question.

I'll show the example
Let's say that any move of black Se1 defends against main threat. Is the following matrix allowed?

1.X; 1...Sc2 (S~, any other knight move disturbs something or illegal) 2.M#; 1...Sd3! 2.A#
1.Y; 1...Sg2 (S~, any other knight move disturbs something or illegal) 2.C#; 1...Sf3! 2.M#

Here the required matrix is formally in place, but all black defensive moves are different.

OK, I apologize for not being totally clear.

This your example fails to fulfil thematic requirement.

It is not a problem if random move is in the specific phases represented by different moves, if it is really random move.
But the fact that correcting moves are different in two phases prevents presence of secondary threat paradox - there is no specific correction (i.e. move defending secondary threat) from one phase that would allow the same mate in other phase.

Fairy solving competition report

12 problems (30 points each for total 360) to be solved within 100 minutes. Fairy elements used were grasshopper, rookhopper, nightrider, nonstop equihopper and Antiköko.

Results:
1. Georgy Evseev - 360 points (!!!) in 80 minutes
2. Double-headed dragon (Ladislav Packa & Marian Krizovensky) - 210/100
3. Marek Kolcak - 183/100
4. Jozef Kobolka - 120/100
5. Milan Svrcek - 102/100

The participants agreed that solving was fun, the judge (me) has admired Georgy who for the first time in history managed to solve everything in Marianka fairy solving event. Hats off!

Congratulations for the organizers of this very interesting tournament in Marianka and for the main judge Juraj Lorinc! Congratulations for the winner Georgy Evseev from Russia - a multiple world champion for solving and number one in the world rating of solvers from long time ago.
I think that such wonderful tournaments in the near future will be held as world championships for solving of fairy-problems.
Returning to the victory of Evseev, I am not surprised at all, because on the one hand he is well-known to everyone as an original and strong fairy-composer. On the other hand, he demonstrates for many years high competence in fairy chess - as a deep connoisseur and profound expert, organizer, judge, commentator and analyst (see for example his comments in Mat Plus, Julia’s Fairies, and so on).
Of course, such championships are also organized in other countries. It seems to me, that the beginning of the special fairy tournaments for solvers were staged before more than 40 years ago, in the German town Andernach, where fairy solving tournament is always important tradition in the programs of the famous international meetings of fairy-composers.
