The tourney requirement says that "In one phase the blocking piece comes out.of the line and in the other phase it is removed from the line" - Can the blocking piece be removed by the line piece itself, though maintaining the same firing line? |

If the capture by the line piece is what "opens" the line, this is not thematic. However, if another piece takes advantage of the line this should be OK |

For someone not making helpmates often, allow me the question:
A "phase" has to be in the same position, or can it be in twinnings?
Do phases have to be solutions, or can it be a set play also?
I just sent you a schema, but most likely that one is completely unusable if it is without twinning. :-)
Thanks,

The encyclopedia says:
PHASE
Play after the key, after tries and set play each
constitutes a phase of play. A problem with set
play is said to have two phases (the set play being
one phase, the post-key play being another); a
problem with three tries would be a four phase
problem (each try being one phase, with the
post-key play the fourth). Play in different phases
will sometimes relate to each other. (Definition
from FIDE Album.)
I guess in helpmates, there can be multiple keys. I would have thought that twins can constitute separate phases, but maybe of a lesser quality because the separate phases are artificial rather than naturally occurring. But what do I know? |

In helpmates a phase means either 1) solution 2) twin 3) set play |
