KoBulChess TT 2012

The website for chess composition http://kobulchess.com announces its first Thematic Tourney in the following sections:

A: Direct #/=, H#/=, S#/= or HS#/= in 2-3 moves with white, black or white and black KoBul King without any other fairy conditions or pieces.

B: Direct #/=, H#/=, S#/= or HS#/= in 2-3 moves with white, black, white and black or neutral KoBul King in combination with other fairy pieces (but only if the problem can be computer tested - for now only WinChloe can be used). Fairy conditions are not allowed.

Definition of KoBul King:When a piece (not a pawn) of his own side is captured, a King transforms into a Royal piece of the same type as the captured one. When the King is in the form of any Royal piece and there is a capture of one of the pawns of his own side, he becomes a normal King again. Captures are illegal if they result in self-check by the transformed King.
Castling is allowed only if the KoBul King is on his initial square in the form of a normal King and if he has not already moved; however he may already have been transformed.

Prizes: books and diplomas
Judge: Diyan Kostadinov
Send problems to: dkostadinov@abv.bg
Closing date: 31.03.2012
The results will be published in http://kobulchess.com website in May 2012

KoBul Kings

A pin transforms into battery - the initially pinned Knight becomes the front piece of a KoBul King specific battery, while the pinning black King loses his Queen privileges. ODT.

This looks like an interesting variant of "Protean Kings": A King when capturing X, turns into a Royal X.

Actually, the difference between two is quite large as manipulating movement abilities of own or opposite king has very different consequences. Moreover pawn captures are handled in a very different way. And so on... I wish I would have enough time for composing to produce something interesting for the tourney.

Yes, with KoBul Kings are possible many paradoxical and interesting mechanisms, with many specific defencive moments including capture of pawns etc. It is very suitable with battery play, promotions etc.
In combination with another fairy conditions like Eiffel chess, Madrasi, Circe etc. many interesting combinations are possible, but in this tourney this kind of problems are not allowed.
To the moment only 30-35 problems with KoBul King are already published, so this is good area for originality. I expect it gonna be very interesting tourney.

The beta-version of Popeye (4.58) supports Kobul-chess. See http://sanguis.xs4all.nl/popeye. If you download examples.zip, there's a kobul example input file in sources/examples/kobul.inp. (py-engl.txt doesn't mention Kobulkings yet by the way).

Thank you Joost de Heer for this information. I was informed from Stephen Emmerson that he is ready with the files for the new version of Popeye where the KoBul Kings will be included, but I see that this is available and online just now. I download and test it - everything looks fine. Kobul Kings is available also in WinChloe, so composers can easy select which is better for them when check their problems of this kind.
I invite all composers to take part in this thematic tourney and will be glad to accept more new interesting problems!

This is an interesting invention. Can we see a few more examples? The website also has only two.

Award coming in a record 22 days. Congrats Diyan. Congrats to Petkov on winning both sections !

Many outstanding problems in the award. But surprisingly only one directmate - an excellent Lacny by Mr.Rotenbertg. Congrats to him too !!

Not record in any case. The times are quicker than ever and the speed of this award publication is praiseworthy (thank you, Diyan!), there were some awards published even sooner after deadline. (I can provide very specific examples.)

From the quick look at winners I am indeed stunned by the winning problem of the middle section, for miniatures without fairy pieces. Kudos to Kostas Prentos and Emmanuel Manolas for great Forsberg twins!

Overall, the KoBul kings have proved their viability without any doubt.
