That means the five moves of both sides are only with the pawn, starting from the second rank, both sides promote to knight and White checkmates.
I don't know the examples from my head, but they all require fairy or promoted pieces. There are also quite some pseudo-thematical ones, including a helpmate in six moves that uses only kings and pawns.
The theme itself, without promoted pieces in the diagram, has never been completed. It is unclear to me if the initial prize of 100 dollars still is up for grabs, but if so I wouldn't know where.
EDIT: I meant obviously "fairy or promoted", not only "fairy". | | (3) Posted by Joost de Heer [Friday, Mar 3, 2017 14:55] | http://pdb.dieschwalbe.de/search.jsp?expression=K=%27100-dollar-thema%27 | | (4) Posted by Ganapathi Ramaswami [Friday, Mar 3, 2017 15:42] | My thanks to Hornecker for explaining the theme and Joost de Heer for giving me the link where I could see 54 problems of this genre! | | (5) Posted by Andrew Buchanan [Sunday, Mar 5, 2017 04:56] | I would be happy to provide US$100 if anyone can succeed in this remarkable orthodox task with standard material. Sadly, I think my money is safe. | | (6) Posted by Olaf Jenkner [Sunday, Mar 5, 2017 20:39] | The first step would be a problem with only one promoted piece left. Maybe you give 50$ and I the rest. | | No more posts |
