Ten years ago (WCCC Rhodes, 2007) our organization (PCCC at that time) established the International Day of Chess Composition. According to the proposal by GM Valentin Rudenko (1938-2016), every 4-Jan we celebrate an important date in the history of chess composition. On 4-Jan-1869, the Czech (Bohemian at that time) magazine “Světozor” published an article by Antonín König (1836-1911), a painter and the founder of the Bohemian school in chess composition. This article is known as one of the earliest sources considering chess composition as an independent form of Art.
So... where is this article?
I asked Brian Stephenson, who holds the British Chess Problem Society Library, who located an archive of Světezor at http://www.digitalniknihovna.cz/mzk/periodical/uuid:ae81bb20-435d-11dd-b505-00145e5790ea.
However there is no issue corresponding to the exact date, and a cursory perusal of the many references to König there does not flag anything up. However, I have no Czech, and I can't get google translate to automatically fire on the archive search results. Does anyone here have a copy of this historic article please, or can locate it in the above archive?
Thanks so much,
Andrew | | (2) Posted by Juraj Lörinc [Monday, Jan 6, 2020 20:20] | Pages of Světozor dedicated to chess of year 1869 are available also here:
http://problem64.beda.cz/silo/svetozor_1869.pdf ("SVCH")
Indeed, no Světozor of given date. The overview paper by Czech chess historian Jan Kalendovský (https://www.chess.cz/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Historie_sachu_v_Cechach.pdf) says that:
- 5.2.1869 - Světozor has announced the first Czech composing tourney (page 5 in SVCH)
- 19.2.1869 - Světozor started to publish König's "Krátké pojednání o úlohách" (Short treatise on problems) laying the principles for composing as artwork (page 7 in SVCH - the treatise continues in the following weeks)
So it is possible the date is indeed not in line with history as scans corroborate statements of Jan Kalendovský. | | (3) Posted by Andrew Buchanan [Tuesday, Jan 7, 2020 09:25] | Thanks very much Juraj - I will look at this in detail. So any idea how we ended up with 4 January as a special date? Is it some kind of jokey opposite to 1 April? | | (4) Posted by Steffen Slumstrup Nielsen [Tuesday, Jan 7, 2020 10:48] | The other day I discovered by chance that Petkov, Kuzovkov and Kasparyan share the same birthday, February 27th. Perhaps a good alternative date to celebrate our art.

But I don't know why. | | No more posts |
