A spin on an old idea

The title should give away, if not the position. Give this one a go!

Mate In 12
(-:
(= 9+13 )

Feel free to share any other spins on old ideas that exist.

Illegal position (8 black pawns and Bc1 is promoted).

Whoops!-fixed with a different scheme.

Illegal position: White pawns need 3 captures, but Bf8 could never have been captured ...

Replaced a pawn with a bishop-somehow I've been far too blind.

James, we greatly enjoy your corrections, but we would enjoy them even more if you would also post them here with new diagrams (in the original post or a reply). :-)

Otherwise, it is kind of mental gymnastics to figure out what new scheme you tried.
Or did you do so, and the original post doesn't show anymore that you edited it? For me that notification seems gone on my posts.

Oh, I forget to re-edit in the original diagram. Sorry Siegfried!

I did not follow what happens here!
Thank you!

if so, the diagram with a white pawn b3 seems legal too... the 8th white pawn promoted to black to be captured by a white pawn

Congratulations on solving Frank!

In regards to the legality, Jacques and Andrew, I find it "preferable" to have the position be legal without the joke involved.

Good call, James: if you had an illegal diagram, it would be an assertion that it couldn't be made legal, which is not the case :)

Well, James, you may be right, and maybe not.
To have your special promotee in the actual play and in the retro play is the so called Alice idea, when the same thing happens "on the two sides of the mirror".
