a trend?

Trying to figure out what's happening here now that I've experienced the following from 3 different composers in a one-year span....
-a composer sends an original for publication, soon followed up with a request not to publish it.

not because there is a better version or improvement, no explanation given, just a withdrawal soon after.

any ideas why this happens?

It seems to me quite strange (and borderline impolite) for an author to withdraw the original without explaining why.

I can propose some educated guesses:
- Composer has realized that his problem features the current WCCT theme and wishes to observe this WFCC recommendation: "Editors of chess magazines are asked not to publish originals with themes of this tournament before the closing date of 10th WCCT : May 1st, 2016". But you would have known if that was the case.
- Composer already has an original already published in your informal tourney and doesn't want two of his problems in the same competition.
- Composer earlier sent this same original to another magazine and has just embarrassedly discovered this misstep.
- Composer has found out that his problem is badly anticipated.
- Composer would like to send the original to another tourney (maybe a thematic tourney?) where it will stand better chances of being awarded.
- Composer finds that the level of the tourney is not adequate compared with the brilliancy of his work. Possible alternative: composer finds his problem too weak for the competition and wishes to send you an even better problem.
- Composer has decided to discontinue collaboration with your magazine, for whatever reason.
- Composer retires from chess composition.

Fellow composers will probably find others (excluding subjective reasons, e.g. whims, moon phases and other unaccountable factors).

Any of these quite probable. But not giving a reason is definitely impolite.

It's SK's second thought that gets to me especially in the computer age when it's so much easier to communicate. Thanks to you both!

There seems to be this notion that our community consists only of Gentlemen (and Ladies) whose behaviour conforms to the highest possible standards.
It doesn't.
