Edgard J.Tchélébi

(= 9+13 )

Mate in 3

1.g8S? (>2.Sxe7) 1…Bh4!

1.Rd8? (>2.g8Q and 3.Qe8) 1…Rh4! and 2…Qg4 (2.g8S? Bxc5!)

1.Rh8! (>2.g8Q) 1…Rh4 2.g8S Bxc5 3.Sd8

A lovely example of the Hamburg theme, with the rook clearances providing good unity. The construction is very clear.

The composer died in 1963 at the age of 34. Does anyone know what happened to him?

The Hamburg theme is just incidental to the White and Black bristols !!

Probably MMD wants to know how Tchélébi died...

The French transliteration from this presumably Arab name (he was from Lebanon, right?!) may be preferable, of course, for a - how to say this? - 'colonial coherence' !? ... even if the English "Chelebi" and the German "Tschelebi" appears also (for instance in respectivelly Meson and CPDS) - - - Breuer, in his "1800 BzIdS" gives the dates * 25.09.1928 - + 04.05.1963

Where do you have that problem from, Michael?

Because of this thread:
http://www.chessproblem.net/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=349

Was the original problem correct and misprinted in Hooper/Whyld's Oxford companion to chess?

I found the problem in a scrapbook of old newspaper columns from the 1970s. Having looked up his dates in one of Murkisch's books I just wondered why someone who was clearly a talented composer died so young.
