Front piece double check records
For example, I did 6 double checks from a single B-R battery
(2 virtual) [A18.303] and 5 real from two [A18.960]
Morse only lists "global" records on this area. On the Albrecht,
"Doppelschach" means a black one and, say, "BatterieS%KFlucht"
gives 7000+ examples. Not helpful :-) Any research ideas?
Also for example, there *might* be 4 double checks from a
promoting P, but the well-known classics I checked (e.g. the Leites)
all only have 3. Anyone know a "4"?

Bettmann has four, with one small Q/R dual (and fifth with other battery and same dual).

Ah, you are of course correct. Bettmann was the second I
checked after Leites, but I just can't count as usual :-)
Well then, my setting gives the four thematic flights...
(With two P batteries and also a small promo dual)

The promotion duals D,T and D,L are accepted in orthodox 2-er, but of course no dual is extra quality.
On the surface, there are 4 double checks in the classic by Samuil Leites, but I suppose you consider the one after 1...d5 is a fake one.
With the Winchloe database, it is possible to search with some features of the solutions, such as Solution like %8=%8=%8%8=% for 4 white promotions and Solution like %R%R% for 2 King moves.
This provides hundreds of results, better than thousands of results, but of course, overlooking something is possible (not counting problems not in the database).
This search provides still more problems with 4 double-check mates by a promoting Pawn.
Among the most "popular" (similar settings done later by other composers) :
P1048793 by Alain C. White (1917) with a checking key and record of 7 bK flights
P1024147 by Gerhard Latzel (1929) with a threat and a key giving 2 flights.
No example with a key giving 4 flights but I guess the matrix by Alain C. White can be adapted for that (with a checking key).

The search with Solution like %2.T%2.T%2.T%2.T%2.T%2.T% (6 second moves by a white Rook) also provides hundreds of results.
P1337386 by Yuri Vakhlakov (1954) have some common features with your 1986 problem, but also some differences (a threat instead of a variation).
Search provides a lot of problems featuring half-batteries with 2 white Rooks.
I was surprised to find only one example with 4 changed double-checks among them, and a recent one : YACPDB 513237 by Kabe Moen (2020).

@Michel: Many thanks of doing the research! (And considering d5 -
no, I just couldn't count AGAIN :-) (I shouldn't try to replay
things in my head, also OTB I can't calculate past one move...)
BTW, if you read *very* closely, whereas in my unpublished original
all flights are given, only three K moves are answered
by a promotion mate. Also, some cheating: checking key :-)
(But only fleeting similarity to White or Latzel.)

Thanks for the kind words about my problem. As far as I can tell, my problem sets the record for changed double-check mates. When I composed it I did find one relevant matrix: yacpdb 28755 has 8 total double-check mates with three changed.

This is my best attempt at six knight double checks.
Even with a lousy key, I would need a promoted piece,
or the position is cooked, or one S move dualistic,
or the pawn structure illegal. I'm desperate, and
I'm not exactly inept with such tasks.

If the threat is allowed to be included, then six knight double checks can be done without promoted force.
A seventh virtual one (from setplay) can be added with adequate choice of the key :
