Dear all,

yesterday the greatest master of the pawn endgame study has passed away.
Mikhail Zinar (22.xi.1950 - 4.ii.2021)

There are no words to describe the loss for the art of the kings and pawns endgame study.

Dear all,
Just a small but significant correction: Mikhail Zinar's birthday given in my previous mail is indeed the one appears in his passport document however due to some historical reasons described in Sergey Tkachenko's great article, Zinar was in fact born 6 months earlier

EDIT: Yochanan Afek, whose mail I quoted above, also had already made a thread:
http://matplus.net/start.php?px=1612528593&app=forum&act=posts&fid=gen&tid=2632&pid=20579#n20579
EDIT2: Birthday corrected by second Afek mail.

I received an e-mail by Sébastien Luce:

 QUOTE
Jaro, the sun of Jaroslav Stun [..] informed me (S.Luce) about a sad news :

"Dear Jaroslav's colleague and friend,

it is with deep sorrow and sense of loss in my heart when I write these lines.
However, as his colleague and friend, I wanted to let you know that my father has recently, shortly before his 70th birthday, passed away, after a valiant month-long struggle with a severe COVID-19 infection.

I know and I am sure Jaroslav valued every bit of exchange, collaboration and sense of community he took part in together with you on the field of Chess - all the Problems, Compositions, Fairies and Puzzles he worked on or shared with you;
and I wanted to take this time to Thank you for all the joyful and happy moments you made for him.

My dad died in complete peace, we know the One who my father believed in and relied on the most throughout his whole life, took good care of him, and we will always keep Jaroslav in our hearts and memories.

Kind regards to all

Jaro"

So sad. Just now I mentioned about the great lady on another thread. There was such a nice article about her in the Matplus Review (by Marjan?) (I think a few issues before its closure).

We have received the very sad news that Odette Vollenweider, the former president and honorary member of our Swiss Association of Chess Composition, passed away on Friday, 26.2.2021.

Odette Vollenweider, initially known by her pseudonym "Gabriel Baumgartner from Brussels", is one of the most important members of our community thanks to her many activities related to chess composition. For several years, she was the delegate of your association at the former Permanent Commission of the FIDE for Chess Composition (PCCC). Over more than 34 years, she was the editor of the chess problems column of Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Among other activities, Odette also published the famous books "Faszinierendes Schachproblem" and "Kostbarkeiten der Problemkunst", for both of which she granted us the publication of PDF documents for download by users of the website of our association: https://www.kunstschach.ch/downloads.html
We are very sad about the big loss and will miss Odette very much.

I am regret to report the passing the great retrograde analysis master Harry Goldsteen, 26th July 1938 to 5th June 2021. Perhaps he is best known for his "Horse Concoction," but he did far more.

I learned of this from Yochanan Afek's Facebook recent post in the group "Chess Endgame Studies and Compositions, who in turn sourced it from Tim Krabbe's Diary Entry #398: https://timkr.home.xs4all.nl/chess2/diary.htm

Krabbe: "Early today, retro genius Harry Goldsteen died, at the age of almost 83.I knew him for 60 years, not very well, but as an open and truly sweet guy." Within is a photo of Goldsteen by Ronit Palache.

Goldsteen even composed his own Cyclic Babson last year: http://matplus.net/start.php?px=1622981033&app=forum&act=posts&fid=gen&tid=2418

This is probably the worst message I will ever have to make on MatPlus.

Three hours ago, my close friend Wolfgang Pieper from Osnabrück, an incredible source of wisdom, keeper of many chess books, a man whose work behind the scenes was invaluable, was found dead.

Our last phone call was yesterday morning, when he told me he felt bad, but the doctors had checked him fully and found nothing. I calmed him down as he was in a state of feeling unwell and being restless due to his condition that sounded very serious to me. Yet, I couldn't advice more than going to a doctor, which he already had done.

Now his brother has called me. I called my relatives first, now it is my duty to inform the world about a great loss of someone whose work regarding chess composition was more behind the scenes. He ran a column in "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" where he published originals and reprints. An interesting curiosity: Until a few years ago, he was the only organizer of a Schwalbe (German chess problem fedetation) meeting who was not a member of it.

I am at a loss for words now.

Another stalwart of the BCPS has passed away. Colin Russ died on 23rd September at the age of 91. Colin served the Society in various roles, as President from 1987 to 1989, Secretary from 1980 to 2001, and delegate to the PCCC from 1987 to 1994. He was also responsible for introducing the late Michael Ormandy to the Society, which led to the establishment of The Problemist Supplement. He will be greatly missed.

Shanahan's passing is really sad. We had a brief interaction some years back, about his favourite "combinative separation".
